Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- After finding out his 8-year-old son was all right after a weekend bicycling accident, rotund Phoenix Suns center Oliver Miller served as a formidable road block against the Boston Celtics.

Miller had 10 points, seven rebounds, six blocks and countless altered shots as the Suns completed a perfect home season against Eastern Conference opponents with a 110-106 victory over the Celtics.

Miller left the team before Sunday's victory over Golden State after finding out that his son, Xavier, had been in an accident earlier that morning. The child suffered only mild abrasions and Miller rejoined his teammates late Sunday night.

"Fortunately he has a hard head," Miller said of his son. "It's very fortunate that he didn't have any broken bones or internal injuries, just a few scrapes on his face. I thank God he's back home, has a new bike and is back on the road again."

The 6-9, 325-pound pivotman had eight points and six boards at the half, helping the Suns to a 62-52 halftime advantage.

After Boston fought back to forge an 84-84 tie early in the fourth quarter, Miller made a key layup and stuck a pair of shots against the glass during a decisive 13-4 run that sealed Phoenix's 15-0 record against the East. He fouled out in the waning moments and received a standing ovation.

"It was a very emotional night for me," said Miller. "My first game back in a while at home, especially after coming back after my son's accident. I had a lot on my mind. But it fell in place and I let the game come to me and I had a pretty good night."

For a second straight night, Jason Kidd fell one rebound shy of his 32nd career triple-double with 16 points, 11 assists and nine boards for Phoenix, which has won four in a row and 16 of 20.

"That's been alluding me all season," said Kidd, who has a league-best five triple-doubles this season. "I know I came close again, but the biggest thing is we got the "W". I'm not worried about the triple-doubles. We've got a nice little winning streak going, we were in control pretty much throughout the whole game."

Cliff Robinson scored 22 points and rookie Shawn Marion added 18 for Phoenix, which moved 1 1/2 games ahead of San Antonio for fourth place in the Western Conference and improved to 28-6 at America West Arena.

"I'm very happy about this win," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "I know it wasn't very pretty out there and it was a back-to-back and they're a difficult team to play because they press quite a bit. We were prepared for it and attacked it. We got the layups and when we didn't they made us pay for it and we went to the foul line."

Paul Pierce scored 27 points and Antoine Walker added 22 and 14 rebounds for Boston, which had won seven of its last eight games but fell 1 1/2 games behind Orlando in the hunt for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Magic outlasted the Chicago Bulls, 88-86, in overtime earlier tonight.

"Orlando unfortunately pulled it out, Chicago had them beat, they took them to overtime. You don't want to root for other team's to lose," Pitino said. "You want to make your own breaks in this game, but we're gonna have to root for some of these teams to lose. Seven of the next nine (games) are on the road. This one obviously would have helped."

"It was a good game, but we didn't come up with the stops that we needed," Walker said. "For us, it's the third game of a (2-1) road trip. It was a streaky game. We just couldn't get a stop when we needed to."

Danny Fortson had 16 points and matched a season-high with 15 rebounds for the Celtics, who trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half before trapping their way back into the game after intermission.

Boston scored 19 points off Phoenix turnovers and completed its long climb back into contention when Walker hit 1-of-2 from the line to make it 84-84 with 11:26 to play.

Robinson responded with a 3-pointer and Marion hit a 10-footer before Pierce knocked down a 15-footer to pull Boston within 89-86. Robinson made a layup off a perfect feed from Kidd, Marion hit two free throws and Miller answered Pierce's free throws with a layup that made it 95-88 with 7:38 left.

Miller blocked Fortson on Boston's ensuing trip and Kidd made a layup on the other end to stretch the margin to nine points with 6:53 remaining.

Rodney Rogers scored 17 points off the bench and Penny Hardaway added 13 for Phoenix, which shot 45 percent (37-of-82) and made 32-of-36 free throws.

Kenny Anderson scored 11 points for Boston, which shot just 37 percent (36-of-93) and held a 54-42 rebounding edge.

The Celtics took a 30-28 lead into the second quarter but the Suns appeared to take control of the game. Toby Bailey hit a jumper, Rogers made a layup and Kidd hit two free throws, sparking Phoenix to a 34-22 period and a 62-52 lead at the half.

Calbert Cheaney hit a 16-footer and Walker dunked as the Celtics closed to 68-63 with 7:41 left in the third quarter. Eric Williams and Tony Battie made two free throws apiece as Boston pulled within 82-81 with 40 seconds left in the period.
