Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett scored 16 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, leading the Minnesota Timberwolves back from a 12-point third-quarter deficit to a 111-107 victory over the slumping Cleveland Cavaliers.

"It was a huge win," Garnett said. "Going on the road it gave us momentum, or a kind of push. Tonight our team chemistry was tested and we passed. Things were not going our way but we got to overtime and we did it."

The score was tied 105-105 when Garnett fed Joe Smith for the go-ahead basket, a short jumper that put Minnesota ahead to stay with 44 seconds left.

Cleveland guard Bob Sura was fouled as he dribbled into the lane with 24 seconds left and the Cavaliers got a fresh shot clock, but rookie Andre Miller could not get his pull-up jumper over Smith to fall. Garnett grabbed the rebound, was fouled and hit a pair, giving Minnesota a 109-105 lead with 8.6 seconds left.

"I was going to pull up and shoot the mid-range shot, and I lost my footing going up," Miller said. "By that time, someone was on my back. I knew it wasn't going to be a call, so I wasn't really worried about it. I wasn't trying to drive to the basket. I was going to pull up because I knew they were playing me for the drive, and they had shot-blockers. I thought I could just pull up and shoot over them, and I lost my footing."

Sura had a layup and Minnesota guard Terrell Brandon hit a pair of free throws for the final margin.

Brandon, a former Cav, scored 24 points and tied his career high with 16 assists. Rookie Wally Szczerbiak added 16 points and Malik Sealy and Smith both had 12, helping Minnesota win for the 12th time in 15 games.

The win gave the Timberwolves (40-26) their second straight 40-win season. With 16 games left, the team is looking to break the 50-win barrier.

"If you get to 50, you have a chance of getting into the top four," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "So I think that would be a great number in the progression of our team."

Lamond Murray led six Cavaliers in double figures with 16 points. Shawn Kemp and Wesley Person scored 15 apiece, Miller had 14, Sura 13 and Mark Bryant 12 for Cleveland, which has lost seven of eight.

The Cavaliers held their largest lead at 79-67 with 2:08 to play in the third quarter but the Timberwolves closed the period with an 8-1 run.

Garnett brought back the Timberwolves in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points as he drew a fifth foul on Murray and a sixth on Kemp. Garnett's three-point play fouled out Kemp and tied the score 99-99 with 2:13 left. Neither team scored again in regulation.

"After a while I started reading the defense better," Garnett said. "They doubled as soon as I got the ball. I just took my time and we crashed the boards better than we did the rest of the game."

After a tight first quarter, the Cavaliers pulled out to a 56-46 lead with 43 seconds left in the first half when Bryant hit a pair of free throws.

The game marked the first time the Cavaliers have played in Minnesota since Randy Wittman left his job as Timberwolves assistant to take over the coaching job in Cleveland.

"It does mean a lot coming back here," Wittman said. "I follow this team, and I root for them as long as they're not playing us. I'm still close to everyone back here. It was special to come back."
