Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jimmy Jackson couldn't make a shot until the Atlanta Hawks needed him most.

Jackson overcame a dreadful night from the floor by scoring eight of the his team's final 10 points as the Hawks held off the Miami Heat, 82-77.

The 6-6 shooting guard finished 5-of-15 from the field, but had made just three shots when he re-entered the game with 3:23 to play. The Heat, who looked sluggish all night after a tough loss to the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers on Monday, were in the middle of an 8-0 run that cut the deficit to 73-72 with 2:53 left.

Jackson made two free throws to stretch the margin to three before Miami's Dan Majerle drained a 3-pointer with 1:29 remaining to forge a 75-75 tie.

Jackson responded by picking up a loose ball and driving for the go-ahead layup with 1:10 left and made it a four-point lead with 34 seconds remaining on another scoop to the basket. He capped the scoring with two free throws with six seconds to go as the Hawks salvaged the finale of a four-game homestand and snapped a four-game skid.

"It depends on who is rolling at the time," Jackson said of his late-game heroics. "If you want to initiate (the offense) off of me, that's fine. But that's the way you win ball games."

Jackson came to Atlanta with recently waived swingman Isaiah Rider from Portland for Steve Smith. He and Alan Henderson finished with 15 points apiece for the Hawks, who earned a 2-2 season series split with the Heat.

"A lot of game we played hard and came up short. It's been a tough season for all of us," Jackson said. "But one thing we've tried to do is continue to be professional, go out there and play hard and still try to win basketball games. And that's what it's all about."

Jamal Mashburn scored 20 points and Alonzo Mourning added 18 and 11 rebounds for Miami, which has dropped two straight after a five-game winning streak.

"We let them hang in their and the combination of just horrible shooting and real sloppy play from a ballhandling standpoint at the end did us in," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We got to the point where we had to make every shot count and Jackson made two great plays. The one off a loose ball and another one off a drive and that was it.

"We have to stop doing this," Mourning said. "We're coming down the stretch of the season where every game is important. We have to play like it. We just don't play like it. At times we do, at times we don't. We're not consistent enough and serious about what the hell we have to do out there on the floor."

Roshown McLeod scored 13 points and rookie point guard Jason Terry had 11 and 11 assists for Atlanta, which shot 38 percent (33-of-87) and scored 19 points off turnovers. Dikembe Mutombo grabbed 14 rebounds for the Hawks.

"We have a lot of young guys," McLeod said. "With the situation that's been going on (with Rider), now guys are getting a chance to play. Guys came in and were very productive. When coach actually allowed them to stay out there and play, it gave them a little confidence. And it let them know that he had confidence in them. And I think that was what really took everything to another level for us tonight."

The Hawks trailed 42-35 at the half but came out with conviction in the third period.

Henderson scored seven straight points for Atlanta before Jackson's short jumper cut the deficit to 48-46 with 7:11 left in the period. Jackson nailed a 3-pointer with 4:08 remaining to give the Hawks a 53-52 lead.

Terry and McLeod followed with back-to-back jumpers as Atlanta stretched the deficit to five with 2:51 left in the third quarter.

"As I've been telling the team, we have to play defense," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "And if you play defense, it's gonna help you get in the game. Maybe you get the ball up court quick with some opportunities like we got. We got a lot of baskets in transition tonight because we looked to push it and we passed it up ahead."

Miami point guard Tim Hardaway beat the buzzer with a layup as the Heat closed within 59-58 entering the fourth quarter.

"It was terrible," Hardaway said. "Two nights in a row that third quarter we didn't do anything. Teams just did what they wanted to do, played harder than we played. We're out there in the third quarter playing lackadaisical. As a team we have to collectively pick it up."

Lorenzen Wright scored six of his eight points in the fourth quarter and appeared to seal the win for the Hawks when he buried a 15-footer that made it 73-64 with 5:12 to play.

Mourning and Mashburn combined for the next eight points as Miami closed within one before Jackson came in to take the Hawks home.

Hardaway had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Heat, who shot 38 percent (31-of-81) and battled the Hawks to a 45-45 draw on the boards.
