Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant each scored 14 points during the decisive first quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers won their 11th straight home game with a 119-96 rout of the lowly Golden State Warriors.

Los Angeles has not dropped a game at the Staples Center since a January 22 loss to Portland and own a 30-4 home mark, second in the NBA behind the Indiana Pacers.

Larry Hughes scored 26 points and Jason Caffey added 17 for Golden State, which has lost 11 of its last 12 road games against the Lakers and 10 of 11 overall.

"Our roster is probably a C-minus with five of our top eight or nine guys out," Warriors coach Garry St. Jean said. "I walk away from here with a wealth of respect for them, but I have a lot of respect for our team's efforts as well."

Golden State played without top players Antawn Jamison, Erick Dampier and Billy Owens and also were missing veterans Terry Cummings and Chris Mills.

Los Angeles never trailed and used a 16-6 run in just over a four-minute span to build a 25-13 lead with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter. The Lakers led 37-19 after one period, shooting an impressive 58 percent from the field (14-of-24).

"They came out and took it straight to us from the beginning," Golden State's Donyell Marshall said. "We didn't come out here and play the way we're capable of playing. They took it at us from every aspect -- rebounding, shooting and they're defense stepped it up."

O'Neal scored 11 of the team's first 15 points and played sparingly the rest of the way, sitting out the entire second and fourth quarters before finishing with 22 points.

"I'm not having fun," O'Neal said. "I'm just playing hard. I'm on a mission. We still have to end the season on a good note. We still have the playoffs and we will need all of our players to be ready and step up. We played hard this game even though it was kind of a boring game."

Los Angeles poured it on in the second quarter, building a 31-point advantage with just over three minutes remaining before entering the break with a 65-45 bulge.

Golden State took advantage of the Lakers' use of their reserves and opened the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run but got no closer than 11 points with 7 1/2 minutes remaining.

"I was determined that they (the reserves) were going to finish the rest of the game," Jackson said. "I would have taken a loss. It really was their game to win or lose. They got a lead and they had to go out there and play it. I just told them to play hard."

The five Los Angeles starters averaged just under 24 minutes and some of the reserves putting in more playing time. Bryant, who finished with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting, was not happy with the strategy despite playing 28 minutes, more than any starter.

"I didn't need to rest, no question," Bryant said. "Unless Phil is going to bench me, I'd rather be out there right up to the playoffs."

Eleven of the 12 Lakers who played recorded at least two points. Rick Fox and Brian Shaw came off the bench to score 14 apiece.

"This gave a chance to a lot of guys to get some rest and it also gave our bench an opportunity to get in there and do the things they have to do to cover our backs," Los Angeles forward Glen Rice said. "We definitely need the bench to go out there and do a better job than they did, but they maintained and we got the victory."

The Lakers shot 50 percent (42-of-84) while holding the Warriors to 40 percent (36-of-90).
