Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- It was a night of highs for the Houston Rockets but just another low for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Rookie Steve Francis scored a career-high 34 points, dished out 14 assists and grabbed nine rebounds as the Rockets shot a season-best 57 percent and snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 110-95 victory over the Clippers.

Francis, who fell one rebound shy of his second triple-double of the season, shot 13-of-19 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc. The Rockets hit 47-of-82 shots and posted their first win since defeating New Jersey in overtime 99-92 on March 4.

"Steve Francis was tremendous," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "He had a chance at a triple-double. We kept him in but after about a minute he didn't get the last rebound and he came to me and told me to take him out and put someone else in. That's the kind of kid he is. He wants to do it the right way and his game speaks for itself."

"I told coach to take me out because we've got a game tomorrow and after the game was decided, I wanted to get some rest," Francis said. "I'm happy to get the win and that's more important than the triple-double."

Cuttino Mobley matched his career high with 30 points to lead Houston's reserves to a 41-7 advantage. Starter Walt Williams collected a season-high 21 points.

"Steve and I tried to be aggressive and shoot when we were open," Mobley said. "Steve played a great game. He's always had a lot of talent offensively."

Houston held a 70-66 lead late in the third quarter when Francis and Mobley ignited an 11-4 run with consecutive dunks, opening an 81-70 advantage entering the final quarter.

The Clippers drew within 83-74 with 9:51 left but the Rockets scored the next eight points for a 92-74 lead with 7:04 to play.

Earlier in the day, center Hakeem Olajuwon was placed on the injured list and will be sidelined indefinitely with recurring respiratory problems. The fading superstar missed 20 games earlier this season with an inguinal hernia. The Rockets activated Matt Bullard to fill their roster spot.

Rookie Lamar Odom scored 28 points for Los Angeles, which has lost six in a row. The Clippers have dropped seven straight on the road to Houston and are are 3-29 against the Rockets since the 1992-93 season.

"Steve is into crowd entertainment and he knows how to do it," Odom said. "He's one of the most confident rookies and he gets what he deserves. He and Elton Brand will probably get co-Rookies of the Year."

Clippers leading scorer Maurice Taylor missed his second straight game with a sprained left ankle but should be available when Los Angeles returns home to face Detroit on Saturday.

"What frustrated me tonight is that we lost our composure," Clippers coach Jim Todd said. "The game was fairly close but we let it get away."

Francis had 11 points and seven boards as Houston forged a 23-22 lead after 12 minutes. Williams scored nine points in the second quarter as the Rockets led 46-40 lead at halftime.

The Rockets caught fire in the third quarter, hitting 15-of-20 shots to push their advantage to 81-70 entering the final period. Francis collected 14 points and five assists in the period, while Mobley added 11 points.

"He's electrifying," said Todd, referring to Francis. "I'm sure the fans enjoyed it... it was fun to watch. I had a good seat but I really didn't enjoy it."

Houston shot only 53 percent (10-of-19) from the foul line but their accuracy from the field more than offset that.

Eric Piatkowski and Tyrone Nesby scored points each and Keith Closs, starting at center in place of Michael Olowokandi, had 10 and 11 rebounds for the Clippers, who shot 45 percent (38-of-85) and committed 18 turnovers.
