Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- One night after rekindling their playoff hopes with a stirring road victory, the Milwaukee Bucks fell flat on their faces at home.

Ray Allen matched a season high with 36 points, but the Bucks fell apart in the fourth quarter, watching helplessly as Alonzo Mourning and the Miami Heat rolled to a 99-87 victory.

Tim Thomas and Scott Williams scored on consecutive trips to give the Bucks a 72-71 lead with 11:04 to play. But Mourning and the Heat responded with an 11-2 run to open an 82-74 cushion with 5:50 remaining.

Allen, who hit 15-of-20 shots, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range, responded with a pair of 26-footers as the Bucks pulled within 84-80. But Dan Majerle answered with a 3-point bomb of his own and the Bucks never seriously challenged thereafter.

"I thought we ran out of gas in the fourth quarter," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "I played a lot of guys 40 minutes tonight and we did play last night. I thought we battled well, but we just ran out of gas. It's the time of the year when fatigue is a factor. But don't forget, Alonzo was really good and they're just a really good team."

After Thursday's stunning 109-84 rout of the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse, the Bucks figured to be primed to begin a serious push for the postseason. But tonight's loss, coupled with eighth-place Orlando's home victory against Houston, pushed Milwaukee 1 1/2 games behind the Magic. The fading Bucks are 7-17 since February 1.

"When you lose, it always means a great deal," Allen said. "This just washes away what we did last night. All the joy from Indiana is gone. We've put ourselves in a position where we need to start beating the teams we're competing with."

Mourning had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Jamal Mashburn scored 22 points for Miami, which remained one game ahead of New York for the top spot in the Atlantic Division.

"It was big bounce-back win for us," Miami coach Pat Riley said, referring to consecutive losses against the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers and the Atlanta Hawks. "On the road we withstood one of the greatest shooting displays (by Ray Allen)."

"Even though they made their run, we kept our composure," Mourning said. "They were killing us on the offensive boards at one point, so we made the right adjustments. We needed to give more effort. They shot the ball extremely well. At one point I thought they weren't going to miss."

The teams split four meetings this season.

Tim Hardaway had 17 points and eight assists and P.J. Brown added 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting for Miami, which shot a dazzling 55 percent (41-of-74) from the field, held a 37-32 rebounding edge and scored 19 points off turnovers.

Glenn Robinson scored 19 points and Sam Cassell added 13 and 10 assists for Milwaukee, which shot 49 percent (36-of-74) and was outscored, 42-26, in the paint and 17-6 on the break.

Mashburn put the Heat ahead to stay, 74-72, with a 26-footer before Clarence Weatherspoon made it a four-point lead on a 16-footer with 8:24 to play.

Cassell made two free throws, but Otis Thorpe had a layup and Mourning followed with one of his own and a 14-footer to make it 82-74 with 5:50 left.

Weatherspoon's layup, Hardaway's 3-pointer and two free throws by Mourning put the Bucks away, opening a 96-83 bulge with 1:04 remaining.

"You always hope the fourth quarter will be a summation of the whole game," Allen said. "But we didn't do that. We didn't do those things to win the game. We let them get rebound, we turned the ball over, we gave them open looks. It was a matter of playing every possession and we didn't do that."
