Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- For the Detroit Pistons, a challenging road trip is over. For the Los Angeles Clippers, the game was over before it started.

Jerry Stackhouse scored 31 points as the Pistons closed out a successful West Coast trip with a 126-107 victory over the undermanned Clippers.

Playing without leading scorers Maurice Taylor and Lamar Odom, league-worst Los Angeles had little chance to compete with the offensive-minded Pistons. Odom was sidelined with a strained right calf and Taylor missed his third straight game with a sprained left ankle.

If injuries to their two best players were not enough, reserve center Keith Closs was scratched minutes before tip-off after suffering an asthma attack during warmups. With the kind of season the Clippers (14-57) are having, it is doubtful whether the threesome would have made much of a difference.

Detroit led from start to finish in posting its eighth straight victory over Los Angeles. The Pistons went 4-1 on their trip and remained two games behind sixth-place Charlotte in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Detroit leads eighth-place Orlando by 2 1/2 games.

"It has been a good road trip for us," Stachhouse said. "We played well tonight. We were able to keep them back for a few stretches and it paid off with a win."

The Pistons outplayed overmatched Los Angeles in every facet, shooting a season-high 63 percent (50-of-79) while dominating the glass for a 48-22 advantage.

"Our season has been nothing but a bunch of peaks and valleys," Piston's all-star Grant Hill said. "We have gotten much stronger on this road trip snd the last thing we need is to have a letdown when we go back home."

Tyrone Nesby scored 22 points for the Clippers, who have lost seven straight games and 12 of 14.

"We were running backwards and they were scoring at will," Nesby said. "We played hard. We just didn't play much defense. We let them do whatever they wanted.

"We're so shorthanded -- we've all just got to go all out," Nesby added. "(Taylor's) out, Lamar, Brian (Skinner) and Eric (Murdock) are out and Keith is sick tonight. I'm playing power forward."

Detroit was quick to take advantage of the Clippers' woes, opening a 35-25 lead after 12 minutes on the strength of 67 percent shooting (12-of-18).

After missing their first attempt of the second quarter, the Pistons hit their next 13 shots to open a 64-40 cushion with 3:46 remaining. Detroit shot a blistering 72 percent (26-of-36) from the floor, including 7-of-8 from behind the arc and led 68-52 at halftime.

The Clippers hit 12-of-21 shots in the third quarter, but their porous defense could not stop Detroit, who took a 98-83 lead entering the final period.

"The effort has been good of late," said Pistons coach George Irvine, who has guided his team to an 8-3 mark since taking over the coaching reins. "We're just putting little tweaks in our offensive game plan and it's coming through."

Detroit led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter, resting their starters for virtually the entire session.

Lindsay Hunter had 20 points and Hill added 19 for the Pistons, who hit 10-of-16 3-pointers but converted only 16-of-23 foul shots.

Michael Olowakandi scored 21 points and Eric Piatkowski had 20 for Los Angeles, who placed all five starters in double figures. The Clippers shot 48 percent (40-of-84) and hit 18-of-23 free throws.

"I don't know who the (heck) is going to start with all the injuries we've had," Piatkowski said. "Seems like someone's hurt every single night."
