Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Michael Finley recorded his fifth career triple-double and fourth this season with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Los Angeles Clippers for the sixth straight time, 112-102.

Finley's effort helped Dallas notch its fourth win in six games but it is still teetering on the brink of playoff extinction. In the Western Conference, the Mavericks trail eighth-place Seattle by 9 1/2 games with 11 left.

Derek Anderson hit a driving layup to bring Los Angeles within 102-99 with 1:44 left. But Dallas went on a 10-3 run the rest of the contest to help it shoot 7-of-16 from the floor in the fourth quarter.

Dirk Nowitzki buried a 3-pointer to puts the Mavs ahead, 105-99, with 1:22 to play. Rookie Greg Buckner hit 5-of-6 free throws and Steve Nash added a pair for Dallas, which hit 11-of-12 from the line in the final period.

The Mavs shot 48 percent (21-of-44) from the floor in the second half and buried 6-of-12 from 3-point range as they outscored the Clippers, 61-47. Los Angeles also hit for 48 percent (19-of-40) in the second half, but was 5-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Finley shot 8-of-20 from the floor and Notwitzki was 7-of-13 to help Dallas shoot 48 percent (41-of-85) overall. Nowitzki and Nash each hit four from 3-point range to help the Mavericks shoot 13-of-26.

"It was good for us to face the adversity we did and respond to get a win," Finley said. "I have high expectations for my teammates and this team. Hopefully those expectations can be reached in the future."

Nowitzki was one of six Dallas players to score in double figures with 20 points. Buckner added 17 and Strickland 16 for the Mavericks, who have not lost to the Clippers since March 29, 1998.

Hubert Davis finished with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting off the bench for Dallas, including three conseutive 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, and Nash chipped in 14.

"Everybody hit big shots down the stretch," Davis said. "The Clippers played really well and we got some defensive stops."

"Hubert actually has been shooting the ball really well," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson. "I've been playing him a lot recently and he's really delivered."

The Mavericks are 2-0 on a four-game road trip that continues in Portland on Thursday.

Tyrone Nesby, who finished with eight points in 11 minutes for the Clippers, was not happy that guard Troy Hudson was released Monday and wore Hudson's name on his sneakers tonight. Nesby vented his frustration about the decision after the game.

"(Coach Jim Todd) is all upset because of that -- wearing (Troy's) name on my shoes," Nesby said. "If he's going to bust the team like that, let him. I know I'm good enough to help. My finger's messed up and I'm out here trying to play. I might as well go on injured reserve. I'll just sit out the rest of the year.

"Then a play happened that (Todd) told me to get back and the guy made a layup. I'm cool with that. Then he's got the nerve to tell me he's not going to play me the rest of the year. That's (garbage)."

Eric Piatkowski scored 28 points and Michael Olowokandi added a career-high 27 for Los Angeles, which has dropped eight in a row. Anderson poured in 19 points and Jeff McInnis added season highs of 14 points and nine assists.
