Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat blew a 28-point first-half lead but Alonzo Mourning and Dan Majerle did just enough down the stretch to pull out an 81-78 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Mourning hit 2-of-4 foul shots and Majerle hit 1-of-2 over the final minute and the Heat survived.

"Winning is one thing. Winning and playing well to win is another," Mourning said. "If we continue to finish games the way we've been finishing them, we'll be out (of the playoffs) in the first round."

The Heat scored just 14 points in the fourth quarter and only 27 in the second half. It was the second straight game the Heat went cold down the stretch, although this was a slight improvement. Sunday at Orlando, Miami scored just seven in the fourth quarter and 19 in the second half.

Rodney Rogers gave the Suns their first lead of the game when he hit 1-of-2 from the line with 3:18 left, then gave them their biggest lead, 75-73, when he hit a 3-pointer with 2:09 to go.

But P.J. Brown hit a jumper and Majerle fed Mourning for a dunk that put Miami on top to stay, 77-75, with 1:34 left.

"When it comes down to the end of the game, the Heat are predictable," Suns guard Penny Hardaway said. "You know that they're going to go to (Tim) Hardaway or Mourning. Zo came up big down the stretch and that's what a superstar is supposed to do."

Before that, the Heat did what championship aspirants are not supposed to do. Over a stretch of four minutes of the fourth quarter, they frittered away a lead. Miami committed seven turnovers while Phoenix was on a 13-0 run.

"I'm just as perplexed as our players are as to why we lose our focus and execution," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "This has been an ongoing problem all year. We did not even get a shot off until there were six minutes or so left in the fourth quarter.

"We are going to work on sustaining the game for 48 minutes, that I can guarantee."

The run brought Phoenix within 68-63 before Mourning scored in the post. But Todd Day answered with a 3-pointer, and after yet another Miami turnover, Day again connected from long range and the Suns were within 70-69.

Bruce Bowen hit 1-of-2 free throws with 4:35 to go and when Penny Hardaway spun free for a driving layup, the score was tied with 3:47 left.

Mourning and Tim Hardaway scored 20 points apiece and Mourning and Majerle each grabbed 12 rebounds for Miami, which snapped a tie atop the Atlantic Division with the New York Knicks.

Rogers scored 22, Cliff Robinson added 20 and Penny Hardaway 14 for Phoenix. Penny Hardaway added nine rebounds and five assists for the Suns, who are clinging to the fourth spot in the Western Conference.

The Heat sprinted out to a 17-2 lead on Tim Hardaway's 3-pointer with 4:38 left in the first quarter and led by as much as 60-32 in the third quarter.

Tim Hardaway scored 18 points in the half, rookie Rodney Buford had nine and Mourning seven as the Heat led 54-28 at the break. Miami shot 55 percent (20-of-36) from the floor in the half while holding Phoenix to 22 percent (8-of-36).

"If we're going to give these kind of efforts, we're going to have to go back to the gym and have the guys practice hard," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Clearly, we played much harder in the last 15 or 16 minutes of the game than we did in the first half. If the effort's there, it should be there all the time, not just when we're behind."

The Heat still held a comfortable 67-50 advantage after three quarters before the Suns nearly froze them out in the fourth.
