Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets were on the verge of reliving a nightmare but awoke just in time.

Keith Van Horn scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the New Jersey Nets nearly blew a 21-point fourth-quarter lead but hung on for a 111-106 victory over the slumping Indiana Pacers.

Coming off a game that saw them blow an 18-point lead in the final eight minutes of a 112-110 loss to Denver on Sunday, the Nets looked primed for their second straight collapse.

New Jersey took a 91-70 on a layup by Lucious Harris with 11:24 left. But similar to their latest loss, the Nets seemed to lose their focus down the stretch, allowing Indiana to get back into the game.

Playing without leading scorer Reggie Miller, who was ejected at the start of the final period for arguing with officials, the Pacers stormed back with a 26-6 run, pulling within 97-96 with 3:49 left. Jalen Rose more than picked up the slack for Miller, scoring 17 of his 27 points in the quarter.

Van Horn followed two free throws by teammate Stephon Marbury with a baseline hook and answered a 3-pointer by Rose with one of his own, giving New Jersey a 104-99 advantage with 2:16 remaining.

The Pacers got within 106-103 on a tip-in by Austin Croshere in the final minute, but Marbury hit a running jumper and added two free throws to give the Nets a commanding 110-103 lead in the closing seconds.

"This was a necessary game following the weekend (loss to Denver)," Nets coach Don Casey said. "Until you keep beating teams down the stretch we keep hearing, `Here we go again.' This was a close game for us but we stepped up our defensive resiliency."

Croshere had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Indiana, which has dropped three straight.

"Two of our three losses are to teams fighting for their lives in the playoff hunt," Rose said. "They play a little harder knowing they've got to make the playoffs, and beat the best team in the conference."

Despite the win, the Nets remain five games behind Orlando for the eighth and final playoff berth in the East. Tonight the Magic blew out Boston -- another team battling for the spot -- enabling the Nets to vault past the Celtics into 10th place in the conference. New Jersey snapped a three-game losing streak.

"We can't let any game get away like the last game," New Jersey guard Kerry Kittles said. If we continue to do that and play well, we will have a good chance. There wasn't any panic tonight. I think whenever this team puts it in their mind that we're going to win, we go out there and win."

Only a week ago, the Pacers seemed a lock to win the Eastern Conference, using the best home record in the league to build a comfortable lead. But Indiana seems to have hit the wall at the worst possible time, allowing the Miami Heat to close within 2 1/2 games of the Pacers.

"We are struggling now and not playing as well as we would like," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "Hopefully though, with a hard practice and the games coming up, we will get back to where we want to be. We're not worrying about the playoffs now. We've got 11 games to go to find a groove. We will be all right, but if we play like we are now we won't last long in the playoffs."

Van Horn scored 12 points and Marbury had nine of his 28 points in the first quarter as the Nets took a 27-21 leads after 12 minutes. Both teams were ice cold from the floor in the second quarter but New Jersey committed only two turnovers in the half and led 48-43 at intermission.

Kendall Gill dominated the third quarter, scoring 15 of his 17 points to help New Jersey take an 85-70 lead entering the final quarter. The Nets used a 9-0 run early in the session to take a 57-45 lead. Miller's 3-pointer brought Indiana within five at the 7:54 mark but Gill scored seven points to highlight a 10-2 run which put the Nets ahead 67-54 at the midway point.

Rookie Evan Eschmeyer made his first NBA start but picked up two fouls in the opening 28 seconds and was limited to only 11 minutes. Eschmeyer finished with six points and five rebounds.

Marbury had 28 points and 10 assists and Lucious Harris contributed 10 points off the bench for New Jersey, which shot 44 percent (41-of-94), hit 24-of-30 free throws and committed only seven turnovers.

Miller and Travis Best scored 13 points apiece and Mark Jackson had eight points and 11 assists for Indiana, which shot 45 percent (39-of-86) and hit 21-of-23 from the line but yielded 24 points off 17 turnovers.

"Earlier in the season, we were able to dig ourselves out of holes like this, but in the last three games we haven't been able to," Croshere said. "Tonight, we were just careless with the ball. It seems like an effort thing; we are just not playing our best ball. It is also a confidence thing. We've lost our last three games against teams we thought we could beat. We just have to get in some good practices and put this behind us."
