Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Chris Webber had his fourth triple-double of the season and Vlade Divac scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half to lead the Sacramento Kings to a 103-95 victory over the New York Knicks.

Webber had 21 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds as the All-Star power forward collected his 12th career triple-double. After a slow start, Divac hit 7-of-10 shots in the second half. The center scored 11 points during the decisive third quarter and finished 9-of-16 with eight rebounds and five assists.

Divac scored the first six points of the third quarter to give the Kings a 63-56 lead three minutes in and added a free throw that stretched the lead to 70-60 at the 5:21 mark. The Knicks battled back within 75-74 on a layup by Charlie Ward with 1:12 left but Sacramento closed the period with a 7-2 run, taking an 82-76 lead.

The Knicks drew within four points on several occasions but the Kings withstood each run, with Webber and Divac leading the way. Allan Houston's 13-footer shaved the deficit to 99-95 with one minute to go but were unable to get any closer. Jason Williams hit two free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory.

"Chris and Vlade were incredible," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "When you get your two big guys to get 40 points, 18 rebounds and 16 assists, that's going to win you a lot of games."

"Being able to pass really helps because in the second half, every time I touched the ball it seemed like I was double-teamed," said Webber, who tied his season high in assists. "It's not just about scoring. When you pass the ball, it gets everyone going and it makes you feel good about your game."

Seventh-place Sacramento (41-29) moved one game ahead of idle Seattle in the Western Conference and can clinch a playoff berth with one more win.

"It was a really solid game for us all the way through," Adelman said. "New York is a tough team. They are so deep and so experienced, having been in the (NBA) Finals last year."

Houston scored 33 points for the Knicks (43-27), who dropped one game behind Miami for the Atlantic Division lead.

"We're the type of team that likes to go up and down and play solid defense and they kind of baited us into not playing their cuts and post positions as physically as we like to," Houston said. "They had us on our heels the whole game, until the fourth quarter and that was the key."

New York shot 70 percent (14-of-20) in the opening quarter but the Kings kept pace by hitting 63 percent (12-of-19). Houston scored 11 points in the period but Webber countered with 10 as the Knicks took a 34-30 lead.

Predrag Stojakovic scored seven of his 20 points in the second period as the Kings continued their hot shooting and forged a 57-56 lead at halftime.

Knicks center Patrick Ewing was ineffective, finishing with only eight points and six rebounds while committing four turnovers. Ewing let his frustration get the best of him in the fourth quarter when he was issued a technical foul with 4:23 to play.

"We weren't getting the same calls they were getting," Ewing said. "when I went up for my shots, Vlade was hitting me on my elbow and that's why I took the technical. I was tired of the fact that I wasn't getting the same calls."

Corliss Williamson scored 12 points but only two after the first quarter. Williams had 11 points for Sacramento, which shot 51 percent from the floor (39-of-77) and converted 21-of-28 free throws.

Latrell Sprewell had 18 points, but just four in the second half and Larry Johnson added 11 for the Knicks, who shot 44 percent (38-of-86) and hit all 14 free throws.
