Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets always seem to have a way of making things interesting.

Keith Van Horn scored a season-high 32 points and the Nets once agaiern Conference, the Nets blew a 21-point lead in the second half. On Sunday, they relinquished an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter in a loss to Denver, and two days later nearly squandered a 21-point advantage in the second half before holding off Indiana.

"I think we did bend a little as we have in the past, but we came back," Nets coach Don Casey said. "We're still alive, playing hard. We played hard. We played with passion."

The Nets opened a 60-39 advantage early in the second half, but thanks to Vince Carter, the Raptors got back in it. He scored 17 points in the third quarter to help Toronto close within 77-73 entering the final period.

Carter made 1-of-2 free throws with 8:58 to go, putting the Raptors ahead, 82-81. But Elliot Perry followed with a layup to put the Nets in front for good.

Van Horn made sure the Nets would not give that lead back as he scored 14 points over the final 7:20 to establish his season high. He scored 30 points in the win over Indiana.

"I just tried to stay focused, tried to stay aggressive, not let the problems we've had throughout the year and problems we've had on the court dictate my mindset and how I play," Van Horn said.

Stephon Marbury added 17 points and Kerry Kittles 16 for the Nets, who trail Orlando by 4 1/2 games for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. The Nets play in Orlando on Friday.

Carter scored 39 points to lead Toronto, which has dropped five of its last six games. The Raptors overcame a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to win at Cleveland on Tuesday.

"It's very tough to come back from 21 points," Carter said. "They want to win themselves. You have to fight like hell to get back and when you do, it takes a lot of energy out of you. They were able to gain their composure and still put the pressure on us. At the end, they put it away by making free throws. We have to adapt to the way things are going. We dig holes and we just have to climb out of them."

Kittles' jumper 28 seconds into the third quarter provided the Nets with their biggest lead, 60-39. But Carter scored 12 points in a 25-6 burst that cut the deficit to 66-64 with 3:56 left in the period.

Guarded primarily by Kendall Gill, the Nets best defensive player, Carter finished 14-of-28 from the field and 10-of-15 from the free throw line as he surpassed 30 points in a game for the 22nd time this season. Toronto is 16-6 in those contests.

New Jersey held a four-point lead entering the four quarter but the Raptors opened with a 7-2 run, taking their first lead at 80-79 with 9:36 remaining on a dunk by Antonio Davis, who had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The Nets composed themselves and took a 91-84 lead with 5:08 left on dunk by Van Horn. However, Toronto again battled back and pulled within 96-95 with 2:12 left on a three-point play by Tracy McGrady.

Kittles and Van Horn made sure the Nets would not blow the lead. They each buried 3-pointers to provide a 102-95 cushion with 81 seconds to go.

Van Horn made 8-of-11 shots from the floor and was flawless at the free throw line, sinking all 14 of his attempts. As a team, the Nets went 28-of-32 from the line.

New Jersey led by four points after one quarter and began the second strong, using a 21-8 spurt to open a 49-32 cushion with 3:06 left before halftime on two free throws by Van Horn. The lead grew to 58-39 at the break behind 14 points from Marbury.

Perry, Marbury's backup, finished with 12 points for the Nets, who shot 47 percent (37-of-78) while holding Toronto to 42 percent (38-of-91). The Raptors did hold a 47-40 rebounding edge.
