Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Anthony Mason scored a career-high 31 points and posted his second triple-double in six days to lead the Charlotte Hornets to their fifth straight win, a 110-101 overtime triumph over the slumping Toronto Raptors.

Mason, who had 12 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists in Saturday's 86-70 rout at Atlanta, put up 31, 14 and 11 tonight. The 6-8, 270-pound power forward buried 8-of-17 shots, all 15 of his free throws and scored four points during a decisive 12-0 burst in the extra session as the Hornets moved one-half game ahead of the Raptors for fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

"Mase has been on a tear lately, he's really found himself," Charlott coach Paul Silas said. "He's getting the ball to the right people. He's largely responsible for the streak we're on."

The triple-double was the seventh of Mason's career and his third this season.

"I've been praying to God and he's been answering," Mason said of his recent success. "If you put forth effort, you're going to get results. Overtime is when team's step up. We were able to impose our will on them in the overtime. We were lucky enough to come up with big rebounds, big stops and big shots to win the game."

With the contest knotted at 94-94, Mason misfired on a potential winning hook shot in the lane with less than a second remaining in regulation. Toronto's All-Star forward Vince Carter missed a desperation heave at the buzzer as the teams went to overtime.

All-Star Eddie Jones scored 32 points, including an 18-footer to give the Hornets the early lead in overtime. Doug Christie answered with two free throws and Carter, who finished with 31 points, gave Toronto its last lead, 98-96, on a 22-footer with 3:42 to play.

Mason hit two free throws, David Wesley was good from 20 feet and made a layup around two more from the line by Mason as Charlotte forged ahead for good, 104-98, with 1:35 left.

"At times, Charlotte physically dominated us," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "Mason stepped up his game and did a good job for his team -- distributing, scoring and rebounding. We should have made plays down the stretch, but we did not handle that well. I think we will continue to improve in these situations as we mature."

Wesley and Elden Campbell combined to knock down four free throws, extending the advantage to 108-98 with 36 seconds left.

Despite his 33rd 30-point effort of the season, Carter could not help the Raptors snap out of their recent funk. Toronto has dropped six of its last seven, falling from fourth place to sixth.

"We just have to shake it off," Carter said. "It is rough times for us now. Things didn't go our way. They did a great job of forcing the game into overtime. They executed perfectly in overtime and we couldn't make a shot."

Jones and Carter staged a personal war. Jones made 11-of-18 shots to go with six rebounds, four assists, five steals and two turnovers in 50 minutes, while Toronto's heralded superstar went 12-of-30 with six boards and three assists in 42 minutes.

Wesley scored 18 points and Chucky Brown, starting for injured forward Derrick Coleman (knee), added 10 and nine rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 49 percent (39-of-79) and scored 21 points off turnovers.

"Chucky did a great job of rebounding, playing defense and then hit key shots down the stretch," Jones said. "That's what the game's about. The question of who's going to step up with the injury to Derrick. The answer was Chucky. If we can get to the fourth spot and give Charlotte home playoff games, that's even better."

Tracy McGrady had 16 points and 13 rebounds, Kevin Willis scored 14 points off the bench and Antonio Davis added 10 for the Raptors, who failed to ensure the first .500 season in franchise history.

Toronto shot 44 percent (33-of-89) and held a 45-40 rebounding edge.

The game featured 18 lead changes, 13 ties and an overall playoff-like intensity throughout. Mason and Carter scored 12 points apiece in the opening period as the Hornets jumped out to a 27-23 lead.
