Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic took another step toward the playoffs while the New Jersey Nets moved closer to vacation.

Ron Mercer scored 22 points as the Magic won their season-high sixth straight game and continued their success at home with a 103-97 victory over the Nets.

Not expected to contend for a playoff spot this season, the Magic have fooled all the so-called experts and have moved 2 1/2 games in front of Milwaukee for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Orlando is within percentage points of Detroit for seventh.

Orlando also improved to 5-0 on a season-high eight-game homestand and beat the Nets for the first time in four tries this season.

"It was great win for the simple fact that we beat the Nets," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I told the guys before the game this had nothing to do with playoffs. This had to do with they beat us three times and we had to get them off our backs. They played the night before and we felt if we could hang in there energy would be on our side. That was clear tonight and that's what won the game."

Kendall Gill scored 21 points and Keith Van Horn had 20 for New Jersey, which fell 5 1/2 games behind Orlando. The Nets have just 10 games remaining.

"We can't lose anymore, I think," Gill said. "We have to win all of them if we are going to have hope. It's a tough loss but they have a hell of a schedule. They're going to start losing, I guarantee you that. They are not going to be on this winning streak for long."

Despite playing on Thursday and traveling to Orlando this morning because of flight problems, the Nets were within 88-84 with 5:08 remaining on a jumper by Stephon Marbury. But that was as close as they would get.

Rookie John Amaechi drilled an 18-footer, Bo Outlaw dunked, Mercer hit a jumper and Amaechi had another basket that provided the Magic with a 96-84 advantage with 2:57 remaining.

"I think fatigue was a little bit of a factor but they had fatigue when they came up and played us," Nets coach Don Casey said. "That's the way the league is."

Amaechi was a force in the middle all night and finished with 17 points while being guarded by fellow rookie Evan Eschmeyer.

Outlaw and Ben Wallace, who round out the Magic's frontcourt, also had big games. Outlaw finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists while Wallace had 11 points and 14 boards. As a team, the Magic garnered a 50-35 rebounding advantage.

"Coach told me that I need to be more aggressive and that's what I did," Outlaw said. "They didn't double me too much so I had a chance to take it to the bucket or pass out."

The Magic's success was not limited to the front line. Point guard Darrell Armstrong finished with 11 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

Mercer was huge in the first half, scoring 14 points and Outlaw had 10 as the Magic shot 57 percent (26-of-46) and opened a 60-50 advantage. Gill and Van Horn had 10 points apiece for New Jersey.

Orlando shot 51 percent (43-of-85) while the Nets finished at 44 percent (38-of-87).
