Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Shawn Kemp scored 22 points and Cedric Henderson came off the bench for 20 as the Cleveland Cavaliers continued their home dominance of the fading Boston Celtics with a 109-103 victory.

Kemp's jumper gave the Cavaliers a 96-91 lead with 4:50 to play before they opened their biggest advantage at 107-100 on two foul shots by Brevin Knight with 24 seconds left.

Cleveland posted its ninth straight home victory over the Celtics, who have dropped seven in a row to fall out of playoff contention in the Eastern Conference. Boston collapsed after opening a 10-point lead late in the third quarter.

"It's pretty much the same story with us," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "We're a young basketball team that does not pay enough attention to the fundamentals of defense."

Cleveland's reserves outscored the Celtics' bench, 50-21, and shot 50 percent (40-of-80) from the field for the 10th time this season. Boston was limited to 40 percent (36-of-89).

"We dictated play at the end of the game, and that was the difference," Cavs coach Randy Wittman said. "It was a give-and-go game, then in the fourth quarter we turned it up defensively and offensively."

Boston led 76-73 after the third period but surrendered 36 points in the final quarter, when the Cavaliers made 11-of-21 shots. Kemp scored eight points in the final 12 minutes and finished with 14 rebounds

"His was an up-and-down game," Wittman said. "He couldn't get into rhythm offensively, but the last seven minutes he was as active as all games."

Paul Pierce scored 22 points and Vitaly Potapenko 20 for Boston, which fell seven games behind Orlando for the final playoff spot in the East.

"We've beaten ourselves so many times this season," Pierce said. "We got to start with the fundamentals and stay with the game plan."

After a close first half, Boston appeared to take control in third period, opening a 72-62 lead on Pierce's layup with 5:29 remaining. But Cleveland ended the period with a 6-0 burst and grabbed its first lead of the second half at 82-81 on Knight's jumper with 9:06 to play.

Lamond Murray contributed 19 points and rookie Andre Miller 15 for the Cavaliers, who split the four-game season series with the Celtics.

"We played well tonight," Henderson said. "The guys played as a unit about as well as they have all year."

Boston got as close as 102-100 on Kenny Anderson's driving layup with 1:05 to go, but Murray answered with a 3-pointer 20 seconds later. After Antoine Walker missed a jumper for Boston, Knight made a pair from the line to put away the contest.

"Give them credit," Pitino said. "They came back in the game. We missed free throws and we did not get the stops in the fourth quarter."

Cleveland made 25-of-30 free throws, while the Celtics were 22-of-33 from the line, including just 15-of-23 in the second half.

Anderson scored 18 points and Eric Williams 16 for Boston, which has dropped five straight on the road.
