Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Rookie Kenny Thomas scored 18 points and grabbed a season-high 22 rebounds to lead the Houston Rockets to a 115-93 rout of the Atlanta Hawks.

Thomas became the first NBA rookie to collect at least 20 rebounds since Tim Duncan of San Antonio on March 22, 1998. He is the first Houston rookie to accomplish the feat since teammate Hakeem Olajuwon on March 19, 1985.

"Twenty-two is a lot of rebounds," Thomas said. "It felt good. It didn't seem like I had that many. I was surprised I had 10 at halftime."

Thomas and Kelvin Cato, who had 21 points and a career-high 15 boards, dominated on the inside, helping the Rockets to a 58-44 rebounding edge. The duo also combined for five of Houston's 12 blocked shots, as Cato had three and Thomas two.

The Hawks lost forward Lorenzen Wright, who injured his right Achilles early in the contest, and played without reserve forward Chris Crawford, who sat out with a sprained left ankle.

After a sluggish first quarter, Houston shot 54 percent (32-of-59) thereafter in completing its fourth straight home blowout victory. The Rockets have averaged 117 points during that stretch while winning by an average of 29 points.

"We play like the '91 UNLV Rebels at home and this year's Wisconsin Badgers on the road," Houston guard Cuttino Mobley joked. "If we played like this from the beginning of the season, the way were playing at home right now, it would have been a different year."

While the Rockets' run at the Compaq Center has been impressive, their recent success is tempered by the fact that the four victories have come against the NBA's worst -- the Hawks, Golden State, Chicago and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Leading 31-29 after 12 minutes, the Rockets opened the second quarter with an 18-4 run for a 49-33 lead with 7:34 to play. Houston took a 65-47 lead at halftime as Mobley collected 13 of his 24 points.

The teams traded baskets to open the second half, but Houston scored the next 11 points. A layup by Cato built its largest lead at 78-49 with 7:20 left.

Atlanta answered with a 12-0 run late in the quarter to trim the deficit to 84-70 and got within 89-76 at the 10:20 mark of the final period. But the Rockets were able to wear down the Hawks with their transition game and pushed the lead to 112-84 in the closing minutes.

"Tonight we rebounded well and blocked some shots," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "This is the kind of stuff we hope to see the last 10 games. I see us growing as a team, but we still have a long way to go to become a contender again."

"We had some injuries that hurt us on the boards, but we did not do a good job of blocking out," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "A couple of times, Dikembe (Mutombo) blocked their shot but we did not block out and they got the putback."

Jim Jackson scored 21 points for the Hawks, who shot 33 percent (26-of-79) after hitting half their attempts in the first quarter. They have lost 16 of their last 20 games.

"We started substituting and we didn't do a good job defensively or protecting the basketball," Wilkens said. "But we have to keep playing our bench to find out what we have. I was proud the way we got back into it in the fourth quarter.

Rookie Steve Francis scored 16 points for the Rockets, who shot 51 percent (45-of-89) from the field and converted 21-of-27 free throws.

Alan Henderson netted 20 points, rookie Jason Terry had 14 and 10 assists and Mutombo had eight points, 15 rebounds and six blocks for Atlanta, which shot 37 percent (38-of-103) and was 12-of-15 at the line.
