Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn's go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minutes capped a 26-point effort and helped the Miami Heat to an 88-84 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Mashburn's bucket with 1:58 left snapped an 83-83 tie and put Miami ahead to stay. Tim Duncan, a 77 percent foul shooter, missed three crucial free throws down the stretch that enabled the Heat to prevail for the first time in four meetings with the Spurs. Duncan finished 5-of-12 from the line.

"(The game) had a playoff atmosphere," Mashburn said. "The Spurs are a quality team. They gave us some problems, but we pulled it out."

"Miami's defense double-teamed me throughout the game," Duncan said. "I thought P.J. (Brown) did an excellent job defending me. But the game came down to me making free throws, and I didn't do it."

Miami avenged a 24-point loss to San Antonio on February 29 in which Miami was held to a season-low 69 points. The Heat went 18-10 against Western Conference opponents this season.

They also moved 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place New York in the Atlantic Division and trail Eastern Conference-leading Indiana by 2 1/2 games with 10 to play.

"I think we can beat anybody when our heart and energy is right," said Miami coach Pat Riley, assessing his team's chances in the playoffs. "We have a chance to get to the Finals and when that happens, it's a toss-up."

David Robinson scored 26 points for the Spurs, who had a five-game winning streak snapped. San Antonio dropped one game behind fourth-place Phoenix in the Western Conference.

Trailing 53-46 at halftime, Robinson took over as the Heat fell into their all-too-familiar third-quarter funk. "The Admiral" scored 13 points in the period while Miami managed only 19, enabling the Spurs to draw within 72-71 entering the fourth quarter.

It marked the sixth time in eight games that the Heat have failed to score at least 20 points in the third period.

"You have to give the Heat a lot of credit, they did a great job," Robinson said. "They held their composure even when we made a great run. We had an opportunity with (Alonzo) Mourning in foul trouble to get back into the game, but we just missed our opportunities."

Jaren Jackson's 3-pointer from the right corner gave the Spurs an 81-79 lead with 3:44 remaining. A free throw by Brown and two more from Mashburn gave the Heat a one-point edge with three minutes left, but Duncan drained a baseline hook that put San Antonio on top, 83-82, at the 2:48 mark.

Mourning tied it by making 1-of-2 from the line, setting up Mashburn's game-winner. Duncan made 1-of-2 free throws to cut the deficit to 86-84 with 1:16 left, but Tim Hardaway converted a layup and Duncan missed two from the line, ending San Antonio's chances.

"It was a great game, I thought both teams played very hard," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We dug a hole for ourselves but we only gave up 35 points in the second half. We're a championship caliber team when we do that. But giving away 53 points in the first half is not us and we can't get away with that."

Mourning scored 15 points, Hardaway had 14 and seven rebounds and Brown added eight and 13 for Miami, which shot 45 percent (31-of-69) from the floor and held a 41-32 rebounding edge.

"It was a big win and a collective effort," Mourning said. "We had a big game from `Mash,' who gave us a lift and kept us in it, especially when Timmy and myself were on the bench."

Duncan had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs, who shot 44 percent (29-of-66) and made 21-of-31 free throws.
