Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- While Stephon Marbury limped on a sore knee, Grant Hill and Jerry Stackhouse stomped all over the New Jersey Nets.

Hill nearly recorded a triple double with 32 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists and Stackhouse scored 34 points as the Detroit Pistons handed the New Jersey Nets their worst home loss of the season, 113-92.

The win moved the Pistons into sole possession of seventh-place in the Eastern Conference, one-half game ahead of Orlando.

"Our style is to get out and run and we have two pretty good guys to run with in Grant and Stackhouse," said Pistons coach George Irvine, who improved to 9-5 since taking over for Alvin Gentry.

After a 113-107 loss at Orlando on Friday virtually ended their playoff hopes, the Nets appeared lifeless and were no match for the Pistons with a gimpy Marbury, who has been bothered by tendinitis in his left knee.

The normally-explosive point guard finished with 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting and 10 assists. The Nets shot 40.5 percent from the field (34-of-84).

"When Stephon labors, we seem to labor," Nets coach Don Casey said. "We missed his ability to score and his ability to penetrate."

The loss dropped the Nets six games behind Orlando for the final playoff spot.

Johnny Newman led the Nets with 22 points off the bench.

New Jersey's previous worst home loss was a 112-92 defeat to Toronto on November 5.

"I think we were still reeling from that loss in Orlando," Casey said. "We ran into a buzzsaw this time. They set the tone and we couldn't match it."

Hill and Stackhouse drove at will against the dispirited Nets and punctuated the day with a number of thunderous dunks. They combined for 37 points in the first half when the Pistons built a 60-48 lead. Hill scored 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting in the half.

"Whenever we take it to the basket and stay aggressive, it is hard for teams to guard us," Stackhouse said. "The dunks are real energizers for the whole team."

After New Jersey scored the first five points of the second half, Detroit went on a 24-6 run to open an 84-59 lead. Hill scored 11 points on four layups and a 3-pointer and Stackhouse added seven to spark the run.

"They just had it going tonight," Nets forward Scott Burrell said. "Grant went to the hole and Stackhouse was unbelievable. They definitely had it rolling tonight."

Hill hit 13-of-18 from the field and Lindsey Hunter and Jerome Williams added 13 points apiece for the Pistons.

The Pistons scored the first nine points of the game, but the Nets quickly recovered with an 11-2 run. A 22-footer by Jud Buechler and a running jumper by Williams in the final 38 seconds of the quarter gave the Pistons a 27-24 lead.

Stackhouse scored 10 points, including two dunks and two layups, and Hill added seven in a 17-7 second-quarter run which opened a 54-41 lead for the Pistons.
