Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers moved closer to a division title, while the Toronto Raptors moved closer to a nightmarish end to the season.

Jalen Rose scored 23 points and Sam Perkins went 6-for-6 from 3-point range and added a season-high 22 off the bench as the Pacers closed in on a second straight Central Division crown with a 104-83 rout of the reeling Raptors.

The Pacers recorded their second straight win while reducing their magic number for clinching the Central title to two. They have an eight-game lead over idle Charlotte with eight games remaining. The Hornets have 10 games left.

"We had been in a little slump, so that was a big win," Rose said. "Coming to Toronto with NBC here for Vince Carter, we had a challenge and we stepped up to it."

Carter, Toronto's leading scorer, scored 17 points but left in the third quarter with a bruised right shoulder and did not return. X-rays were negative and his status for Tuesday's game against Detroit is questionable.

Tracy McGrady had 24 points to lead the Raptors, who have lost seven of eight and fell 1 1/2 games behind fifth-place Charlotte in the Eastern Conference.

"The ship is sinking, and we're frustrated," McGrady said. "We need to call a team meeting to get everyone on the same page. We need to get back to the basketball we were playing before. It's going to have to be the whole team that steps up to turn this thing around."

Reggie Miller's 3-pointer sparked a 17-6 surge spanning the first and second quarters as the Pacers jumped out to a 10-point lead. Perkins drained two 3-pointers in the run and a three-point play by Austin Croshere with 10:23 left in the second quarter allowed Indiana to grab a 32-22 advantage.

Perkins, who scored 14 points in the first half, added his third and fourth 3-pointers in a 13-4 run, capped by Indiana's seventh 3-pointer of the half by Rose with 1:08 remaining that extended the Pacers' lead to 52-37.

"Coming off the bench you want to give the team a lift and I haven't been doing that lately," said Perkins, who entered the game averaging 6.8 points a game. "Tonight my teammates found me open and I was knocking them down."

Indiana shot 50 percent (21-of-42) in the first half to take a 54-39 lead.

"We wanted to establish an inside-out game," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We ended up with a lot of open shots and we made them, while Toronto missed a lot. That's why we won the game."

The Pacers extended their lead to 75-57 on a driving layup by Travis Best with 1:01 left in the third quarter and led 77-61 entering the fourth period.

A 12-4 run to open the fourth quarter allowed Indiana to take its largest lead at 89-65. Perkins and Miller each made 3-point shots, Croshere scored four points and a driving layup by Best capped the surge with 8:11 to play. Perkins added his sixth from behind the arc with just under five minutes remaining.

"We needed to adjust and we were unable to do it," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "Hopefully we can get this thing straightened out against Detroit. I will do anything in my power, including shaking up the lineup, to make sure this thing doesn't slip away."

Kevin Willis scored 10 points and was the only other Raptor in double figures as Toronto shot 38 percent (38-of-81), making only 2-of-16 shots from behind the arc.

Miller went 3-for-6 from 3-point range and scored 13 points. Croshere added 11 and Best contributed 10 off the bench for Indiana, which shot 48 percent (39-of-81). The Pacers made 10-of-22 from 3-point range.
