Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Derrick Coleman was a question mark for the Charlotte Hornets entering tonight's game with the Boston Celtics. But he ended up providing the exclamation point in his team's victory.

Playing despite an inflamed left knee, Coleman scored five of his 25 points in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter as the Hornets won their seventh straight game, 112-105 over the reeling Celtics.

Anthony Mason scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Eddie Jones added 25 points for Charlotte, which moved into a tie with idle Philadelphia for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Hornets hold the edge in the tiebreaker by virtue of winning three of four meetings with the Sixers this season.

Charlotte can match its season-high eight-game winning streak Thursday at Miami.

"The playoffs are looking better, but we have to keep fighting for positions," Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "Right now, I just want to secure a playoff spot."

Paul Pierce's jumper with 2:05 left in the fourth quarter cut Charlotte's lead to 105-102. But Coleman responded with a dunk with 1:43 remaining to extend the Hornets' lead to five.

After a driving layup by Antoine Walker with 1:31 to play moved the Celtics within three, Coleman received a nice pass from Mason inside and converted a three-point play with 1:26 left as Charlotte opened a 110-104 lead. Coleman added 1-of-2 free throws with 28 seconds remaining to provide the final margin.

"There are some (games) we have to dominate," Mason said. "They (Celtics) shot the ball well, but we have to put teams away. Offensively, we're moving the ball well but on defense, we have to put teams away."

Kenny Anderson scored 23 points and Walker added 22 for Boston, which suffered its eighth straight loss and sixth straight on the road. Boston is eight games behind eighth-place Orlando with eight games remaining.

Boston took an 86-82 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Hornets took a 94-93 lead when Jones sank two free throws with 5:22 to play.

Another two free throws by Jones extended Charlotte's lead to 103-98 with 3:06 left. The Hornets sank 18-of-21 free throws in the fourth quarter, led by Mason, who made 9-of-10 from the stripe over the final 12 minutes and was 13-of-15 overall at the line.

Coleman grabbed 14 rebounds and Mason 11 as the Hornets overcame 22 turnovers by outrebounding Boston, 40-28, and shooting 57 percent (37-of-65), including 4-of-7 from 3-point range.

"Mason and Coleman can do so much when they get the ball, and we could not defend that," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "You usually want to front those kinds of players, but it's tough to do so most of the time."

Charlotte led 54-53 at the half, but the Celtics opened up a nine-point advantage on a six-foot jumper by Walker with 2:47 left in the third quarter. The Hornets closed the period on an 11-6 run. Mason had five points in the surge.

Pierce scored 18 points and Dana Barros added 13 as the Celtics made 51 percent (42-of-82) of their shots, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.
