Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- It took a while for the Minnesota Timberwolves to separate themselves from the Atlanta Hawks, but when they did, they left no doubt about the difference between a playoff contender and a lottery team.

Joe Smith scored eight of his 18 points in overtime and the Timberwolves ran off the first 13 points of the extra session on their way to an 86-76 victory over Atlanta.

The victory strengthened the Timberwolves' hold on sixth place in the Western Conference, giving them a 2 1/2-game lead over the Sacramento Kings. Minnesota trails fifth-place San Antonio by two games.

Kevin Garnett scored 18 points and rookie William Avery added a season-high 13, including a 3-pointer in overtime, and dished out seven assists for the Timberwolves, who played without Terrell Brandon. The starting point guard was out with the flu.

"I found out in shootaround that Terell was sick," Avery said. "I wanted to get a good wind coming into the game, because you never know how much you will play. I thought I was in a really good flow tonight. The guys showed great confidence in me."

Neither team lead by more than eight points during regulation -- Atlanta scored the first eight points of the game, and the Wolves clawed to a seven-point lead midway through the second quarter.

Without Brandon, who is averaging 8.8 assists, the Wolves shot just 38 percent (36-of-95), makring the third straight game they shot worse than 40 percent. But against the Hawks they were able to overcome their poor execution.

Smith found the range in the extra session, hitting all four of his shots.

"Tonight was a great opportunity for me to step up and play well, considering we didn't shoot well at the beginning," Smith said. "We played good offense, but we weren't knocking down the open shots."

Garnett missed a 19-footer to start the extra session, but Smith connected from 18 feet with 4:07 to go to put the Wolves ahead to stay, 75-73.

Atlanta center Dikembe Mutombo missed a hook from seven feet, and Garnett grabbed the rebound and fed Smith for a 19-foot jumper.

LaPhonso Ellis missed a jumper but Mutombo got the rebound and fed him for another try. He missed again and Garnett pulled in the rebound.

Garnett was fouled as he hit a layup and missed the free throw, but Avery controlled the offensive rebound and nailed a 3-pointer with 1:56 left, putting the Wolves ahead 82-73.

After another pair of missed shots by the Hawks, Garnett found Smith for a layup, stretching the lead to 84-73 with 49 seconds to go.

Alan Henderson tried a 3-pointer for Atlanta but missed, and Ellis could not get his tip-in to fall before Avery grabbed the rebound for Minnesota. Smith hit an 18-footer with 14 seconds to go before rookie Dion Glover finally hit a 3-pointer for Atlanta with 3.9 seconds left in overtime.

"We just couldn't score any baskets," Ellis said. "I was point-blank range and had some really good looks, and was 0-for-3 in overtime."

"In overtime we didn't make shots," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "They hit a couple of big shots and then they opened the floor up and took Dikembe away from the basket... and we didn't rotate, and Avery hit a big three. Avery came in and did a great job for them."

Jim Jackson led Atlanta with 13 points, Jason Terry had 11 and Laphonso Ellis 10. Mutombo grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked four shots.

The Hawks have dropped nine straight on the road and have lost 17 of their last 20 overall. They are 7-29 on the road.
