Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- With Kobe Bryant serving his suspension and fellow All-Star Shaquille O'Neal in foul trouble for most of the fourth quarter, the Los Angeles Lakers found another hero.

Veteran forward Robert Horry had 11 points, 11 rebounds and scored the go-ahead basket as the league-leading Lakers extended their latest winning streak to 10 games with an 84-83 triumph over the Phoenix Suns.

Bryant sat out tonight's game after being slapped with a one-game suspension for Sunday afternoon's skirmish with New York point guard Chris Childs. O'Neal, who scored 31 points through three quarters, received his fifth personal with 9:51 remaining and Los Angeles clinging to a 71-69 lead.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson was forced to rely on the rest of his talented team to hold off the surging Suns and Horry proved the difference in crunch time.

He snapped an 80-80 tie with 1:10 to play, tipping-in O'Neal's missed jump hook in the lane. Horry grabbed the rebound of Cliff Robinson's missed 3-pointer on Phoenix's ensuing trip and buried a 20-footer at the other end to make it a four-point cushion with 35 seconds left.

Robinson buried a 24-footer to cut the margin to one and when Ron Harper missed two free throws with 21 seconds to go, the Suns had another chance. But Robinson misfired on a 25-footer with 1.2 seconds left and Harper tipped the rebound out of reach as time expired.

"We didn't execute all that well, but I still got a good look at it," Robinson said of his last shot. "I was able to get a good shot off. It felt good, it just didn't go."

"Wow, what an ugly game we played tonight and won it," Jackson said. "I don't know how."

O'Neal finished with 32 points on 13-of-22 shooting and Glen Rice and Harper added 10 points apiece for the Lakers, who have won 29 of their last 30 overall and are within one victory of clinching homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs.

"It was a tough game and we had to ride it out," O'Neal said. "We were a man short, but we gutted it out and that's what good teams do. Guys like Robert and Rick (Fox) did a great job coming off the bench. I carried us in the first half and I think our defense held us in. We're just happy to get a win against a great team on their home floor."

Penny Hardaway had 23 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and Robinson added 20 points for the Suns, who had won nine of 11. Phoenix remained one game ahead of fifth-place San Antonio in the Western Conference.

"That was a difficult loss," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "I felt like we played hard, we just didn't play. We did a lot of crazy things out there tonight that we hadn't been doing."

Los Angeles has won six in a row on the road and completed a four-game series sweep of Phoenix for the first time since the 1996-97 season.

"As a group, we feel we can beat this team," Robinson said. "We just haven't yet."

Kevin Johnson had his best effort in three games since coming out of retirement to replace injured point guard Jason Kidd, scoring 14 points and handing out four assists in 26 minutes.

"The hard things for me are believing that I'm playing basketball again and then just trying to get in good basketball shape," Johnson said. "It was good to be out there, but the next two weeks are critical for me to try and get in shape."

The Suns appeared to have the upper hand early, racing to a 23-17 lead after one quarter behind nine points from Robinson. But Los Angeles came storming back behind O'Neal in the second period. The 7-1 center netted 23 of the Lakers' 40 first-half points as Los Angeles clung to a one-point lead at the break.

Harper had eight points and eight assists for Los Angeles, which shot 40 percent (33-of-82), held a 48-45 advantage on the boards and overcame 18 turnovers.

Horry hit two free throws to give Los Angeles a 79-74 lead with 3:46 remaining before Rodney Rogers dunked, rookie Shawn Marion buried an eight-footer and Hardaway made two free throws to put Phoenix in front, 80-79, with 1:49 to play.
