Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Rik Smits scored 17 of his 25 points in the first quarter and Dale Davis added 11, including a key basket in the final minute, as the Indiana Pacers held off the New Jersey Nets, 105-101.

Indiana led by 17 points with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter, but Keith Van Horn, who scored 12 points in the final period, capped a 20-6 run with a 3-pointer to bring the Nets within 98-97 with 47 seconds remaining.

"We didn't dig in defensively and we didn't get a hand up on shots," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "We had a decent lead and New Jersey was one steal away from winning the ballgame."

Sam Perkins found Davis under the basket for a layup with 33 seconds to play. Davis failed to complete the three-point play before New Jersey's Scott Burrell missed a layup with 19 seconds left. Jalen Rose was fouled on the rebound and sank two free throws with 16 seconds to play as Indiana opened a 102-97 lead.

Kendall Gill's layup with 12 seconds left cut the margin to three, but Reggie Miller made two free throws with 11 seconds to play.

"We sure can't be satisfied with the way we finished it, but it's a good win," Indiana guard Mark Jackson said.

The Pacers never trailed and have won three straight to post the fourth 50-win season in team history. Indiana, which tied a franchise record with its 33rd home win, moved 2 1/2 games ahead of idle Miami for the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs while decreasing the magic number for clinching their second straight Central Division title to two.

Van Horn finished with 26 points and Johnny Newman added 20 for New Jersey, which played without star point guard Stephon Marbury and officially was eliminated from playoff contention. Marbury sat out the Nets' fourth straight loss with a sore left knee.

"We know we are out of the playoffs, but we've got to be pros and come to work for these last few games," Gill said. "I just want to finish the season hard and do it right."

Indiana led 49-43 at halftime, but after the Nets scored the first four points of the third quarter, the Pacers went on a 22-4 run. Jackson scored eight points during the surge, including a pair of 3-pointers. The second gave Indiana its largest lead at 71-51 with 5:43 left.

Smits and Rose had eight points apiece in the third quarter, when the Pacers shot 61 percent (14-of-23) and opened a 79-65 lead.

Rose had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Jackson, playing in his 1,000th NBA game, went 4-for-5 from 3-point range and added 16 points.

The Pacers shot over 53 percent (44-of-82), including 6-of-16 from 3-point range, and outrebounded New Jersey, 42-32, as Davis had 11 boards.

With Gheorghe Muresan making a rare start for the Nets, Smits was 8-for-14 from the field and scored 17 of Indiana's 25 points in the first quarter as the Pacers built a five-point lead. Travis Best came off the bench and scored eight in the second quarter as Indiana took a 49-43 lead at the break.

"It was something we talked about," Smits said on matching up with the 7-7 Muresan. "I tried to take advantage of my speed against him, and it worked out pretty good."

Gill was 7-of-11 from the field and scored 14 points and Elliot Perry also had a season-high 14 off the bench as the Nets shot 48 percent (39-of-80). They made only 3-of-10 from behind the arc.

"We just need to play like we did in the second half tonight," New Jersey coach Don Casey said of playing out the string. "It's definitely not a lack of effort on our part. We can use this game to say to everyone that we can compete with the stronger teams."
