Game StoryDENVER (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki matched a career high with 32 points, including the winning basket with 14 seconds left in overtime, as the Dallas Mavericks edged the Denver Nuggets, 116-115.
With Dallas trailing by one point, Nowitzki took the ball on the left side of the key, drove the lane and banked in a shot, capping a tremendous performance. He shot 11-of-16 from the field, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out six assists for the Mavericks, who won for the fifth time in six games.
"I felt good the whole night," Nowitzki said. "Some shots just fell, like the last one. the biggest thing is the win. I felt I had a pretty good game but I should have gotten a couple more rebounds at the end of the game."
Nowitzki scored eight points to spark a 12-2 run that put Dallas ahead 94-85 midway through the fourth quarter. But George McCloud and James Posey scored five points apiece during a 10-0 dash as Denver grabbed a 95-94 lead with 3:58 left.
Hubert Davis and Michael Finley hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Dallas a 106-102 advantage in the final minute before Keon Clark made a layup and McCloud sank two free throws for a 106-106 tie with 10 seconds left. Mark Strickland's drive was blocked by Antonio McDyess as time expired, sending the game to overtime.
McCloud scored 23 points with seven rebounds and McDyess collected his 29th double-double of the season with 18 and 13 for the Nuggets, who lost the season series, 3-1. Three of the four games were decided by two points or less.
"It was a fun game," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. Every game this year with Denver has been right there. They've been very competitve and exciting.
"Dirk Nowitzki is an up-and-coming star player," Nelson added. "We're very excited about him. He definitely won the game for us and got the game ball. The last play is what we wanted and Dirk made a great play."
Dallas has won 10 of its last 14 games and is 24-18 since a dismal 9-23 start. The Mavericks have won 13 of their last 20 road contests.
Denver reserve Chris Herren scored a career-high 18 points, reaching double figures for the second straight game and third time this season. He also tied a career high with four 3-pointers.
Dallas jumped out to a 35-20 lead after 12 minutes, with Finley scoring 10 points. The Nuggets used a 19-6 run to close within 58-53 at halftime.
Denver took its first lead since 4-2 when Van Exel converted a drive, making the score 83-82 at the 8:59 mark of the fourth quarter.
Finley had 23 points and six rebounds and Steve Nash added 15 and 10 assists for Dallas, which shot 49 percent (44-of-90) and and hit 22-of-28 free throws.
Nick Van Exel had 17 points and 12 assists and Posey had 17 and seven rebounds for Denver, which shot 51 percent (43-of-85), including 10-of-21 from behind the arc, but yielded 24 points off turnovers.
Nowitzki had a lot of good looks at the basket," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "He had a great game. We lost the game in the first quarter. We came out with no energy at all."
"We came out lackadaisacal and without a spark," McDyess said. "We had to fight the whole game and play hard to catch up. I'll take the blame; all our starters take the blame. We let Dallas do what they wanted. We had no defense at all in the first quarter."
