Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Jeff Hornacek scored five points in the first three minutes of the second half and the Utah Jazz blew open a close game on their way to a 105-85 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

The Jazz led, 50-45, at the break but scored the first 10 points of the third quarter, capped by Hornacek's awkward driving scoop shot and 3-pointer. Before the quarter was over, Utah cleared its bench and the Jazz kept the lead close to 20 points thereafter.

"They just executed. It was incredible," Phoenix guard Kevin Johnson said.

The Suns didn't execute, turning over the ball three times during the 10-0 run, and each time the Jazz scored. When Hornacek hit his 3-pointer with 9:40 left in the third, Utah was up 60-45.

The Jazz stretched the lead to 75-54 when Karl Malone took a John Stockton pass for a fastbreak layup with 1:55 left in the third. Utah's largest lead was 26 points, which they reached twice in the fourth, and the Suns never got closer than 19.

Malone scored 19 points, Armen Gilliam had 14 and Hornacek and Olden Polynice 12 apiece for the Jazz, who have won four of their last five games. Polynice had season highs of 12 points and 14 rebounds.

"I'm not here to blow my own horn, I'm just here to get the job done," Polynice said. "The opportunities were there and I took advantage of them, that was it. This team's not about that and I'm not about that."

Jazz backup guard Howard Eisley played 34 minutes and dished out a season-high 13 assists to go with his nine points and no turnovers.

Beginning a three-game homestand, the Jazz are 11-1 in their last 12 at the Delta Center. They are 23-8 at home this season as they try to avoid 10 home losses for the first time since the 1992-93 season.

Penny Hardaway led Phoenix with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Rodney Rogers scored 11.

Kevin Johnson had another solid effort in his fourth game since coming out of retirement to replace injured point guard Jason Kidd. He scored 12 points and handed out five assists in 19 minutes, hitting 5-of-8 shots from the field.

"Not in my wildest imagination did I think that I would be in Salt Lake City or playing in a Phoenix Suns uniform again," Johnson said. "This team has battled so much adversity all year. Jason goes down, breaks a bone in his foot with 16 games left. They didn't know if he'd be back for the playoffs. They called me and asked me if I would finish playing the remainder of the season. I said, `I'll give you whatever I have.'"

He has recorded 30 points and 11 assists while playing a total of 59 minutes in his comeback.

The Suns, who had a three-game road winning streak stopped, gave up 18 points on 18 turnovers, but only scored six points off 10 Utah turnovers. Phoenix also had only 14 assists, while the Jazz connected for 33 assists.

"It was a pretty weak performance on our part," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Clearly, they were much better than we were tonight. We didn't have energy. We were lost on defense. And they pretty much carved us up."
