Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- It appears the Milwaukee Bucks are ready for the arrival of the Orlando Magic on Monday.

Ray Allen scored 21 points and Sam Cassell, Glenn Robinson and Tim Thomas added 20 apiece as the Bucks gained ground on Orlando for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot with a 109-101 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

The Bucks posted their third win in four games and moved within two games of the idle Magic for the eighth spot with six games remaining, including a home game against Orlando on Monday. Milwaukee (37-39) could be only 1 1/2 games back heading into Monday's showdown if the Magic lose to Philadelphia at home on Sunday.

"There's a lot of hope left for this season," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "If we win Monday, it may come down to which team can win on the road. If we split our road games, then a week from Monday (also against Orlando) will be a battle."

Johnny Newman scored 21 points and Keith Van Horn added 19 for New Jersey, which suffered its sixth straight loss and were beaten by Milwaukee for the first time this season. The Nets were eliminated from playoff contention on Friday.

"Right now we're just a step slow," New Jersey coach Don Casey said. "Now we're just going to try and stop the skid, because that's a bad way to go out."

Milwaukee led 61-50 at the half and opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run. Robinson scored the last seven points in the surge, including a layup with 9:40 remaining to extend the lead to 70-50. Milwaukee took its largest lead at 87-64 on a layup by Cassell with 1:43 left.

The Bucks led by as many as 21 points early in the final period, but New Jersey managed to get as close as the final margin.

"We're going to win Monday, based on the fact that we have to win," said Cassell, who dished out 11 assists. "Nothing more than that, nothing less. It's what we have to do."

Allen went 9-of-17 from the field and Cassell made 8-of-15 shots as Milwaukee shot just over 50 percent (46-of-91), including 5-of-12 from 3-point range. The Bucks outrebounded the Nets, 47-30, and outscored them in the paint, 50-38.

Milwaukee closed the first quarter on an 11-2 run as Scott Williams had four points, including a short jumper with three-tenths of a second remaining. Cassell scored five of his nine second-quarter points in a 12-4 surge, including a layup with 3:55 to play that gave the Bucks a 55-38 cushion.

Thomas also scored nine points in the second quarter as the Bucks took an 11-point lead at the half.

"When Tim struggles, we tend to struggle," Karl said. "When he plays well, we tend to play well. He's giving us what we need off the bench."
