Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- This time it was close, but the result was the same for the Dallas Mavericks against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Erick Strickland scored 16 of his 19 points through the first three quarters and the Mavericks held on to beat the Clippers, 98-96.

The win was the seventh straight for the Mavericks over the Clippers, including all four this season. They won the first three meetings by an average of nearly 11 points.

"The Clippers came in here very feisty and fought hard the whole game, but we held them off," Strickland said. "They stayed in it. They showed a lot of pride. They didn't give up."

The loss was the 12th in a row for the Clippers, one shy of tying a season-high 13-game skid from February 1-24.

"To be quite honest, I didn't even know it was 12," Clippers coach Jim Todd said. "We've had some losing streaks already."

Michael Finley also scored 19 points for the Mavericks and Dirk Nowitzki added 18.

Tyrone Nesby led the Clippers with a career-high 29 points, including five 3-pointers. Maurice Taylor had 24 points and a season-high 15 rebounds.

"The outcome wasn't like we wanted it, but no matter how hard you play, the game doesn't seem as good unless you come out with a win," Taylor said.

Los Angeles outrebounded Dallas, 57-40, but committed 20 turnovers.

"We came at them hard with double-teams and traps and it worked for us," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "I really liked our effort today."

Clippers center Michael Olowokandi was ejected in the third quarter for shoving Dallas center Shawn Bradley. Both received technicals for scuffling under the basket before Olowokandi received a second technical for pushing Bradley.

"To be quite honest, I'm glad he at least retaliated and fought back," Todd said. "You don't want to see him get thrown out at any time, but if you're going to play with emotion, you've got to retaliate a little bit."

Finley and Strickland each hit 3-pointers to highlight a 13-2 run which opened a 62-47 lead with 6:50 left in the third quarter.

The Mavericks took a nine-point advantage into the fourth quarter but Nesby hit a 3-pointer, a short jumper and a layup to spark a 9-2 run which pulled the Clippers within 76-74 with 7:43 left.

Dallas responded with an 8-1 burst as Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash each hit 3-pointers, giving the Mavs an 84-75 lead.

But Los Angeles again fought back, pulling within 90-87 on consecutive layups by Nesby, rookie Lamar Odom and Taylor. Nash responded with another clutch 3-pointer, giving Dallas a six-point advantage with 1:29 remaining.

A long 3-pointer by Jeff McInnis pulled the Clippers within 97-96 with 3.5 seconds left. Los Angeles immediately fouled Finley, who hit 1-of-2 free throws with 3.2 seconds remaining.

A desperation 3-pointer by McInnis at midcourt went over the backboard.
