Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets returned to the postseason by quickly taking advantage of a sluggish Indiana Pacers squad.

Eddie Jones, Elden Campbell and Derrick Coleman scored 19 points apiece and the Hornets raced to a 17-point first-half lead and cruised past the Pacers, 96-80.

Anthony Mason had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Charlotte, which had dropped its last two games but returned to the playoffs after a one-year absence. The Hornets also moved within a game of Philadelphia for fourth place in the Eastern Conference and home-court advantage in the first round.

"We're happy to clinch a playoff berth," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "That was the biggest thing. Now we can concentrate on continuing to play well and try to get home-court advantage. ... The guys have stepped up and made it happen. I'm really proud of them."

"We have to worry about ourselves and get caught up on how other teams are doing," Jones said. "Beating a team like Indiana makes you feel good about yourself."

Jalen Rose scored 18 points and Dale Davis 12 for the Pacers, who clinched the Central Division title on Friday but saw their lead over the Miami Heat for the conference's best record sliced to one game.

"We did not come up with a big effort today and we can only blame ourselves," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We came out really passive. You have to be the aggressor to win.

The Hornets led 5-4 just under three minutes into the contest when two free throws by Coleman ignited an 8-0 spurt. Mason, Campbell and Jones all had baskets during the run.

The lead grew to 23-10 following a free throw by Jones with just under three minutes left in the opening quarter but the Pacers fought back within 33-27 just over four minutes into the second period.

Charlotte answered the challenge as Jones and rookie Eddie Robinson hit two free throws apiece for a 37-27 lead. Chucky Brown had a free throw with 7:38 left and Campbell buried a 16-footer from the left corner 53 seconds later for a 13-point bulge.

A layup by Mason was followed by a 17-footer by Baron Davis to push the lead to 44-27 before Rik Smits had a three-point play for Indiana. Mason capped the 13-3 burst with two free throws with 4:57 to go in the half.

The Hornets pushed the lead to 19 late in the quarter and led 57-40 at the half. Mason, Campbell and Jones combined to shoot 14-of-22 from the field in the opening half. The Hornets also held a 28-17 rebounding edge after 24 minutes.

The Pacers shaved the deficit to 77-67 at the end of three quarters and opened the final quarter with a 5-2 spurt. But Indiana managed just one basket over next six minutes and the Hornets were able to cruise thereafter.

"I wouldn't call it a statement game," Silas added. "We just wanted to come out an play better then we have the last two. We need to ge it together for the playoffs."

"We had the ball twice down seven and couldn't convert," Bird said. "That was a big point in the game and we just couldn't quite get over the hump."

Reggie Miller was just 3-of-11 from the field and Smits 4-of-11 as Indiana made just 37 percent (31-of-84) of its shots. They were destroyed at the free throw line, making 12-of-14 to Charlotte's 30-of-38.

"The problem was that we got off to a slow start," Pacers forward Dale Davis said. "Even though we clinched our playoff spot already, this was a big game, We just didn't respond. This a letdown. There was a lot at stake. ... We just didn't get the job done."

Listless Indiana never led, managed just three steals and forced only eight turnovers.
