Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker had a huge third quarter, but it was his shot in the waning moments of the final period that helped the Boston Celtics snap their season-high 10-game losing streak.

Walker scored 20 of his 34 points in the third period, but his 24-footer with 25 seconds remaining proved to be the difference as the Celtics ended their skid with a rousing 99-94 victory over the slumping Atlanta Hawks.

Walker hit 14-of-23 shots, 5-of-6 free throws, handed out six assists and grabbed eight rebounds for Boston, which snapped the second-longest skid in franchise history. Trailing 94-88 with three minutes to play, Boston reeled off the game's final 11 points, including Walker's 3-pointer that snapped a 94-94 tie.

"Tonight was a nice change," Walker said. "We were the ones who made the big shots down the stretch and held the other team scoreless. We were the ones who forced the big turnovers and we took advantage. The streak had to end sometime."

Jimmy Jackson missed a 3-pointer on Atlanta's ensuing possession and Walker skied to grab the rebound. He also stole Jackson's inbounds pass with 11 seconds to play.

"Both teams needed a win right now, there's no question about that," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "We needed to cheer up our basketball team. That's what a win like this does. The key for us in that fourth quarter was to drive to the basket and dish it if we were covered. Paul did a great job of that and he also set up the game-winning shot."

Kenny Anderson scored 24 points for the Celtics, who won the season series from the Hawks, 3-1, for the first time since the 1989-90 season.

"We've got to try and win all of these games at home the rest of the way so that it gives us some confidence, even though we didn't make the playoffs we're still a good team," Anderson said.

Jackson had 27 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who have lost seven in a row overall and 12 straight on the road dating to a 95-87 triumph at Seattle on February 25.

Paul Pierce managed just nine points for the Celtics, who shot 48 percent (38-of-79) and scored a whopping 28 points off turnovers.

The Hawks ran out to a 25-18 first-quarter lead behind nine points by Alan Henderson. Boston closed within 49-44 at the half before Walker took over the in the third quarter.

The explosive 6-9, 245-pounder hit two free throws and a pair of driving layup to give Boston a 53-52 lead with 7:13 remaining in the second quarter.

He added three layups, two free throws, a seven-footer, a nine-foot hook and a tip-in at the buzzer to give Boston a 72-68 advantage entering the final period.

Despite Walker's outburst the Celtics still found themselves in a six-point hole with three minutes left. But Pierce converted a three-point play, Anderson made a layup and Walker forged a 94-94 tie on a free throw with 1:38 left.

Pierce missed a potential go-ahead layup and Jackson committed a turnover before Walker settled matters by draining his only 3-pointer of the night. Anderson capped the scoring with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds to go.

"We didn't take care of the ball down the stretch," Jackson said. "We gave them the ball several times on careless turnovers. They took adavantage, that's why they won."

Henderson scored 14 points, LaPhonso Ellis 13 and Dikembe Mutombo added 12 and 15 rebounds for Atlanta, which shot 48.5 percent (33-of-68) and held a 38-31 advantage on the boards.

"This is very tough for me," Mutombo said. "Going from a winner to becoming just a loser, it's not easy. Same mistakes game after game."
