Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- At least this time Shaquille O'Neal got to watch an exciting game.

With O'Neal sitting out his second straight game with a left ankle sprain, Glen Rice nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime and added two crucial free throws in the extra session as the Los Angeles Lakers edged the Seattle SuperSonics, 106-103.

Los Angeles established season lows for points and shooting percentage in Saturday's 98-80 setback to San Antonio as O'Neal, a virtual lock for his first league Most Valuable Player Award, missed his first game after injuring his ankle during Wednesday's victory over Golden State.

The Lakers appeared to be on their way to an easy win as they held a 13-point lead with 10:09 left in the fourth quarter. However, Seattle outscored Los Angeles, 28-15, over the next nine minutes to forge a 90-90 tie following Shammond Williams' driving layup with 1:25 left in the fourth quarter.

After Rice hit a jumper to put the Lakers ahead, Lazaro Borrell knotted the contest and Williams made two free throws for a 94-92 lead for Seattle with 12.1 seconds remaining.

With Gary Payton and Jelani McCoy covering him, Rice nailed a jumper from the right side as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.

"It was a little bit of luck, but we all need a little luck," said Rice, who shot 7-of-18 from the floor but 14-of-15 from the free-throw line. "I just went to the corner, squared up and fortunately things were on our side. One of the things Seattle did down the stretch that made the game go into overtime was that they allowed me to get the ball and I was able to turn around and sink a hot one for us."

Kobe Bryant's running jumper snapped a 100-100 tie with 1:36 left in overtime and Rice converted a pair of free throws with 10.4 seconds remaining. After Williams connected on a 3-pointer with 7.9 seconds left, Rice fed A.C. Green for a dunk with less than five seconds to go. Vernon Maxwell missed a 15-foot jumper for Seattle as time expired, closing out a game that featured 15 lead changes and nine ties.

"I'm very proud of the effort our guys gave in the second half and overtime," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "It ended up being a fantastic game to watch, the only thing bad about it from our perspective, is that the wrong team won."

Rice finished with 28 points and nine rebounds and Bryant had 33, 10 and six assists for the Lakers, who hold the top seed in the Western Conference and could face the Seattle in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.

"I think we needed a game like this, especially without Shaquille in the lineup," said Bryant, who had five points in the overtime. "I think it was important for us to get the win down the stretch with him out. We expected them to play their hearts out. Going down the stretch it was going back and forth and we knew whichever team got the last possession would win."

Williams scored a career-high 28 points off the bench and Payton contributed 22, 12 rebounds, and eight assists for the SuperSonics, who fell 1 1/2 games behind the seventh-place Sacramento Kings with five games left. The Kings have lost nine of their last 11 games.

"If the outcome of this game had been different, it would have given us a good lift, but we're not going to quit," said Sonics forward Horace Grant, who chipped in 12 points and recorded the 1,000th blocked shot of his career in the fourth quarter. "We feel we should have won the game without the big guy in there. We just needed to hit the boards a little harder."

John Salley played center in O'neal's absence and contributed just eight points and five rebounds. Rick Fox came off the bench to add seven and five rebounds while Brian Shaw and Devean George had six points apiece for the Lakers, who shot 40 percent (38-of-95) from the field but converted 26-of-30 from the free-throw line.

Borrell, a little-used reserve, scored all of his 10 points in the fourth quarter but Vin Baker, Seattle's second-leading scorer, fouled out late in the game with just three points and nine rebounds.

The Sonics shot 41 percent (39-of-96) and were outrebounded, 56-49.
