Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Elden Campbell had his prayer answered.

Campbell made an improbable turnaround jumper as time expired, giving the Charlotte Hornets a critical 107-105 victory over the Washington Wizards.

The desperation shot by Campbell just added to a bizarre ending. Anthony Mason made two free throws with 2.8 seconds left to give Charlotte a 105-103 advantage. Following a timeout, Derrick Coleman fouled Mitch Richmond, who made a pair of foul shots to tie it with 2.2 seconds remaining.

After another timeout, Campbell took the inbounds pass from Mason and launced an 18-footer over Aaron Williams that made its way through the basket as time expired.

"You don't even get a chance to think about it," Campbell said. "You just have to turn and let your muscle memory make sure you get a good shot up -- shoot it like you shoot it every day. It felt pretty good.

"I made sure I got it up, didn't want to throw it straight at the basket. I figured it had a pretty decent chance. It feels good to hit a game-winning shot with two seconds left on the clock. We didn't want it to come to that, but we'll take it."

Campbell turned into the hero even though the final shot was not designed for him.

"The play was designed for E.J. (Eddie Jones) first and Elden second because we knew that we would be able to get the ball inside to Elden," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "After he [Campbell] set the pick, we thought they would switch a smaller man on him and he would get a better look. But they didn't do that and Elden hit a tough shot."

Eddie Jones scored 26 points and Coleman had 16 and 16 rebounds for the Hornets, who won for the ninth time in their last 11 games while remaining one game behind Philadelphia for fourth place and home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.

"It's very important for us to stay focused this week because there's a lot of spoilers out there and they want to knock us off," Mason said. "If I wasn't playing to make the playoffs I might want to make a team get a lower seed. There's going to be a lot of teams coming at us, if for nothing else, just to prove that they can beat a good team in the East. So we've got to be prepared and ready because we're playing on their court."

Richmond netted 21 points and rookie Richard Hamilton had 19 for Washington, which lost for just the fourth time in its last 12 games.

A layup by Mason provided the Hornets with an 81-75 advantage early in the fourth quarter. But Juwan Howard scored six points in a 16-5 spurt that he capped with a 20-footer that gave the Wizards a 91-86 lead with 6:34 remaining.

Howard finished with 16 points Gerard King and Chris Whitney added 14 apiece for the Wizards, who shot 51 percent (41-of-80). Playing for injured point guard Rod Strickland, Whitney also handed out 10 assists.

The Wizards were still in front 100-95 with 3:58 to go on a 3-pointer by Richmond. Coleman and David Wesley each had a basket for the Hornets to cut the deficit to one before Hamilton converted a three-point play to give Washington a 103-99 lead with 2:29 to go.

Wesley, who scored 21 points, made a jumper and Jones two free throws, tying it at 103-103 with 1:18 remaining.

Wesley and Jones combined to make 19-of-32 shots from the floor for Charlotte, which shot 51 percent (41-of-81) overall and won despite its bench being outscored by the Wizards' reserves, 35-10.

Charlotte built a 55-49 advantage at halftime behind 12 points apiece from Wesley and Campbell. The Hornets also held a 79-75 lead after three quarters.
