Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets are finishing the season the same way they started it -- without a clue.

Elton Brand continued to make his case for Rookie of the Year with another big game, leading the Chicago Bulls to a 100-93 victory over the hapless Nets.

Among the most disappointing teams in the league for the second straight season, the Nets matched a season-high seven-game losing streak. New Jersey's other seven-game skid came from November 11-23 in the midst of a 2-15 start to the season.

The first overall pick in the draft, Brand finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds. He came into the contest leading all rookies in scoring at 19.5 points and rebounds at 9.9 per contest.

Matt Maloney scored a season-high 19 points and Chris Carr added 17 for the Bulls, who took the lead for good late in the first quarter.

Chicago (17-60) won for the third time in its last five games and moved 2 1/2 games in front of the league-worst Los Angeles Clippers. The Bulls finished with the third-worst mark in last season's lockout-shortened campaign.

"We're trying to finish the season strong," Brand said. "We're playing well when it counts, and hopefully we'll have some momentum going into next season."

The Bulls went ahead for good, 24-22, with 52 seconds left in the first quarter on a layup by rookie Michael Ruffin, who scored seven points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Chicago was still in front by four points with just under five minutes left before intermission and used a 7-0 spurt to open a double-digit lead. Maloney scored five straight points and Carr had a layup to provide the Bulls with a 50-39 lead with 1:44 left before halftime.

The worst offensive team in the league at just 84.1 points per game, the Bulls shot 56 percent (20-of-36) in the first half. They finished at 54 percent (36-of-67) overall, including 69 percent (11-of-16) from 3-point range, reaching the century mark in points for just the fourt time this season.

Maloney was particularly effective from the floor, making 6-of-7 shots, inlcluding 5-of-6 from behind the arc.

"Elton was working the double-team well in getting us some shots," Maloney said. "It's something we've been struggling with lately, but tonight were hitting shots out of rhythm. And that's the reason we shot the ball better."

Brand scored 11 points in the third quarter to help the Bulls open an 81-67 advantage heading into the final period.

The Nets were able to pull within 87-80 with 6:40 remaining on a jumper by Lucious Harris but Hersey Hawkins nailed a 3-pointer and Brand made a free throw to restore Chicago's double-digit lead with under five minutes left.

Chicago native Kendall Gill scored 19 points and Elliot Perry added 17 for the Nets, who shot 43 percent (35-of-82) and were outrebounded, 45-36.

"It certainly wasn't one of our better efforts," New Jersey coach Don Casey said. "We weren't energy filled. We never got out on their 3-point shooters. They certainly took advantage of our mistakes. Their spot-up shooters did a great job."
