Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- It took the Phoenix Suns almost 40 minutes to realize their opponent was the Los Angeles Clippers.

Cliff Robinson scored 22 points and Todd Day added 10 of his 18 points off the bench during the fourth quarter as the Suns escaped with a 95-88 triumph, their 50th of the season.

"I don't think we were overconfident," Robinson said. "They got off to a better start than we did. We knew we had to win this game. We didn't play as well as we would like, but sometimes you run into those games.

With the Suns trailing 72-68 with 9:08 to play, Day scored five points during a 18-2 burst which turned a four-point deficit into Phoenix's biggest lead of the contest at 86-74 with 4:22 remaining.

Los Angeles chipped away at the deficit and had a chance to make it a four-point game when Jeff McInnis stole a pass from Day, but his reverse layup caromed off the rim with 55 seconds to go.

"It wasn't even a good finish," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "We were throwing the ball all over the place. Clearly this ought to be a signal to our guys that we've got a long ways to go in a short period of time to be a good team."

Rookie Shawn Marion added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns, who remain a half-game ahead of San Antonio for fourth place in the Western Conference and home-court advantage in the opening round.

Rookie Lamar Odom scored 26 points and pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds for the Clippers, who have lost 13 straight games and own the league's worst record at 14-63.

"We're just trying to make something happen for our team," Odom said. "(We are) just trying to stay competitive, but we all know that we can play."

Los Angeles started out of the gate with a 14-2 burst in the first quarter to take a 22-9 lead with 2:43 to go. Derek Anderson keyed the run for the Clippers, scoring six points, but the Suns scored the six final points in the quarter to narrow the deficit to seven.

Phoenix missed 11 of its first 15 shots and committed six turnovers during the opening period while Los Angeles shot 50 percent (10-of-20) from the field.

Anderson was on his way to a 30-point game before he left the contest with lower back spasms midway through the fourth quarter. He finished with 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting.

Eric Piatkowski gave Los Angeles a 31-24 lead with 5:36 remaining in the second with a layup before Phoenix rallied to tie the contest at 35-35 on a pair of free throws from Day. He gave the Suns their first lead of the game at 37-35 on another set of free throws with 1:57 remaining and they led 43-40 at halftime.

"We didn't come out and do the things we do well in the first half," Day said. "Guys like myself can get some minutes because we are going to be valuable in the playoffs and the team is going to need us. The more we play these last few games, the more we get into the flow, the more confident we have come playoff time."

Penny Hardaway scored 17 points for Phoenix, which has won 11 of its last 15 games overall and is at .500 on the road (20-20) for the first time since a 94-80 victory here against the Clippers.

Los Angeles has lost 10 straight in the season series since winning at Phoenix in March 1997 and has a season-high eight-game skid at the Staples Center.
