Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Cedric Ceballos scored 11 of his 19 points in the first quarter and the Dallas Mavericks snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Seattle SuperSonics by roaring to a 117-103 victory.

Erick Strickland scored 21 points for the Mavericks, who had seven players in double figures and thoroughly trounced the playoff-bound SuperSonics in ever facet of the game.

Dallas scored 73 points in the first half and led by as many as 34 in the second. The Mavs shot 53 percent (49-of-93) from the field, held a 57-41 rebounding advantage and owned a 29-19 edge in fast-break points.

"This is as well as we've played for three quarters and four minutes," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "The guys were just really good tonight. They were crashing the boards. When we get into the open court we are very good. That really was where the game was won. We try to run on every occasion."

Michael Finley scored 18 points and rookie Greg Buckner added 17 for the Mavericks, who bounced back nicely from Thursday's 111-102 loss at Houston that snapped a five-game winning streak. In that game, center Shawn Bradley was punched in the mouth in a fight with Walt Williams and both were suspended one game.

"It just shows we're moving in the right direction," said guard Steve Nash, who had 12 points and eight assists. "Hopefully we can continue to improve and build on this season. We've had some adversity this year with injuries and different disturbances throughout the season but we've stuck with it and played with passion and pride for the most part."

"You would think that we would have been (tired) coming off a back-to-back and didn't get in until two in the morning," said Strickland. "But we showed a lot of guts and went right after them."

Dallas (37-42) has its most wins since the 1989-90 season.

"I think this team has overachieved all season and I've had more fun coaching this year than I can remember," Nelson said.

Vin Baker scored 25 points off the bench for Seattle (43-36), which saw its lead over Sacramento in the Western Conference standings reduced to one-half game. The SuperSonics and Kings are fighting for the seventh seed, which would avoid the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round.

"That was a thorough beating we took, pretty much in every way imaginable," SuperSonics coach Paul Westphal said. "I was very impressed with the Mavericks and very unimpressed with us."

Ceballos got the Mavs going and had some help from Strickland, who added nine points in the first period, and Buckner, who had eight. Dallas shot 62.5 percent (15-of-24), held Seattle to 31 percent (8-of-26) and grabbed a 35-23 lead.

"Everybody got it going early," Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "Cedric came out on fire and got us all going. It was a great night to blow out a good team like Seattle. It's just a great win."

"We couldn't really find anybody when the game was on the line that was having a good game and they had a whole bunch of guys," Westphal said. "They were just feeding off each other. It seemed like they were never going to miss."

The Sonics still were within 13 points before the Mavs went on a 14-4 burst that featured 3-pointers by Nash and Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 10 points. A 3-pointer by Finley pushed the margin to 69-42 with 2:46 to go in the second quarter and the Mavs held a 73-50 halftime lead.

"When it's going right, it's going right," Strickland said. "Everything was going right. Everyone was on fire. Everyone was shooting the ball. Everybody was active. It was just an all-around good game for everybody."

"They were just unconscious in the first half and we just couldn't find our stroke," Baker said.

The second half basically was garbage time. The Mavs opened a 34-point lead in the third quarter and emptied the bench in the final period. Recent signee Rodrick Rhodes played eight minutes but did not score.

Sean Rooks scored 10 points for Dallas, which managed just 12 in the final period and still won easily.

Cuban rookie Lazaro Borrell scored 15 points and Gary Payton added 12 for Seattle, which shot 42 percent (39-of-92).
