Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Rodney Rogers scored 22 points off the bench and Shawn Marion added 20 as the Phoenix Suns eased their way to a 112-88 rout over the lowly Los Angeles Clippers.

Marion scored six of the game's first 16 points as the Suns raced to a 16-5 lead midway through the first quarter. The Clippers never led after trading the opening two baskets of the contest.

Both Rogers and Marion grabbed 11 rebounds apiece for Phoenix (52-27), which pulled two games ahead of San Antonio for fourth place in the Western Conference and home-court advantage in the opening round.

"It was a game that we had to have and we went out and got it," Rogers said. "They had a couple of guys that were hurt and they played us close at home. We didn't want to have a game like that at our place."

Los Angeles was without starting forward Maurice Taylor (ankle) and Derek Anderson (back spasms), its two top scorers. Rookie Lamar Odom was held to 14 points on just 3-of-12 shooting.

"When we played them a few days ago, we had Maurice and D.A (Derek Anderson), so we lose 33 points," Clippers coach Jim Todd said. "We didn't know where we were going to manufacture points. We were hoping maybe Pike (Eric Piatkowski) would go off, but you have to be able to stop somebody."

In the last matchup here, the Suns posted their second-largest victory margin over the Clippers, 114-68. Tonight's win also was the second straight victory over Los Angeles this week and 11th in a row overall.

Tyrone Nesby scored 21 points for the Clippers, who have lost 15 straight and seven in a row on the road.

After Los Angeles fell behind by the early margin, the club fought back with a 19-7 burst, led by nine points from Nesby, to pull within 24-23 with 52 seconds remaining in the opening period.

However, Phoenix bridged the first and second quarters with 10 straight points to regain a double-figure lead at 34-23 after Oliver Miller's dunk with 10:13 remaining in the first half.

"It's the same old story all year long," Piatkowski said. "Our defensive transition is terrible. You come out against a team like Phoenix and you know they like to run and we just didn't get back. They had so many uncontested layups."

Outside of Nesby's 19 first-half points on 6-of-12 shooting, the rest of the Clippers hit the wall, shooting an abysmal 29 percent (11-of-39) in the opening 24 minutes.

Phoenix took its biggest lead of the third quarter when Miller converted a three-point play for a 66-49 advantage with 6:38 to play. The third-quarter lead hovered around there for most of the remaining time as Los Angeles could only get to within 12 points on two occasions.

The Suns held the Clippers to only 34 percent (27-of-80) from the field, including 6-of-20 from three-point range.

Conversely, Rogers and Todd Day combined to hit 7-of-11 from behind the arc off the bench for Phoenix, which shot 47 percent overall (40-of-85) and outscored Los Angeles' reserves, 55-25.

"I was grateful the bench guys got a lot of minutes," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "I thought they played with a lot of energy. We got the lead and as a result we didn't have to bring the other guys back in."
