Game StoryWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell scored five of his 34 points in overtime as the Milwaukee Bucks improved their slim playoff chances with their fourth victory in five games, 120-116 over the Washington Wizards.
Cassell hit two straight jumpers to open the extra session and nailed a free throw with 11 seconds left as the Bucks built a 119-116 lead. Mitch Richmond missed a short jumper for Washington and Tim Thomas made a foul shot with 5.5 seconds left to secure the win.
"I just told the guys after regulation that we've got to come out aggressive in overtime," Cassell said. "That's what we did, so we deserved this win. We earned this win right here."
The Bucks were helped by Wizards guard Chris Whitney, who committed two of his four turnovers in the final minute of overtime.
Milwaukee has taken two of three meetings from Washington this season and moved within one-half game of Orlando for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Bucks visit the Magic on Monday and host the Wizards on Wednesday to close the regular season.
"I said about three or four weeks ago that I had a funny feeling this season was going to come down to another win in Orlando," Bucks coach George Karl said. "That's probably the way it's going to be. A week or two ago, we would've begged and been happy as (heck) to get that opportunity."
Glenn Robinson poured in 31 points and Ray Allen added 29 for the Bucks, who shot 51 percent (41-of-80) from the field. Cassell was 10-of-14 from the floor and Robinson was 12-of-24, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Milwaukee made 9-of-14 3-pointers.
"We could be sitting in the locker room with a loss under our belt and our playoff hopes in a lot of jeopardy, but we pulled it out," Allen said. "Washington put forth a hell of an effort."
Richmond and Juwan Howard scored 21 points apiece to pace seven players in double figures with Whitney and rookie Richard Hamilton adding 17 apiece for the Wizards, who have lost three of four. Washington shot 46 percent (43-of-93) from the field.
Allen nailed a 3-pointer as Milwaukee opened a seemingly comfortable 109-105 cushion with 12 seconds left in regulation. Don Reid made a layup with 7.5 seconds left for Washington, but Robinson hit a free throw with 5.9 seconds to play for a 110-107 cushion.
Richmond, who finished 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, took a feed from Howard and nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.
It was a familiar sight for Milwaukee, which fell to Charlotte in overtime on Friday as Eddie Jones nailed a 3-pointer late in regulation for the Hornets, forcing the extra session.
"All I could do was close my eyes because I knew we had won the game. I couldn't see it two days in a row," Allen said. "Mitch has been doing this for a long time, and he makes his shots."
The Wizards went on an 11-2 second-quarter spurt to open a 50-40 lead with 7:12 left before halftime. Hamilton scored five points during the run, closing it with a 3-pointer.
Washington was 12-of-23 from beyond the arc.
Cassell began his charge by spearheading 12-4 burst that lifted the Bucks within 71-70 with 7:03 left in the third quarter. He had six points in the spurt and Robinson four, including a 16-footer that capped it.
