Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose scored 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, when the Indiana Pacers pulled away from the Detroit Pistons for good, cruising to a 112-101 victory and their first Eastern Conference title.

Rose connected on 9-of-13 shots, including a 17-footer and a long 3-pointer on consecutive trips, to give Indiana a 92-80 cushion with just under nine minutes to play.

"We certainly weren't the glamor pick before the year," Rose said. "Everyone talked about our six free agents and how Larry (Bird) was leaving us and how we didn't have a chance and we'd be lucky to finish fifth or sixth. It feels great to overcome that and finish first. Clinching the No. 1 seed in our division is a springboard to the playoffs."

The Pacers (54-26) will enter the playoffs as the top seed in the East for the first time as they still seek their first NBA title. Coach Larry Bird has led Indiana to the Eastern Conference finals in each of his previous two seasons at the helm and already has announced this will be his last year on the sidelines.

"We struggled at times this year," Bird said. "But we did it right and worked for that win. We won a big game in Miami (Friday) that put us in this position. I thought everybody has played well at times and somebody has stepped up all year. These guys have hung together."

Reggie Miller scored 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Rik Smits added 14 for the Pacers, who won the season series from Detroit, 3-1.

"This is great," Miller said. "Now we know that any deciding game is going to have to come to Conseco (Fieldhouse). We think we're the best team in the East and we hope it doesn't come to any games like that. But it feels a lot better to know if it does, they'll be in Indiana.

"It's even sweeter because everyone said we were too old and we were bums and we were has-beens and they should trade all our (butts) in November. To hear that all season and still finish first means a lot."

The Pistons clinched a playoff spot earlier today when Orlando lost at Miami. Detroit decided to rest injured superstar forward Grant Hill, who had an MRI today that revealed a bone bruise in his left ankle.

Jerry Stackhouse scored 26 points and Michael Curry added a season-high 23 in place of Hill for Detroit, which still needs to win one of its last two games to clinch the seventh seed in the East.

"I feel good about what our players have done," Pistons interim coach George Irvine said. "I've enjoyed a lot of what has happened and you can give the players the credit for (clinching a playoff spot). I am happy for our players. They have given a great deal of effort."

Dale Davis had 12 points and 15 rebounds and Mark Jackson added 11 points and nine assists for Indiana, which improved to 19-21 on the road and 19-8 against Central Division foes.

The Pacers shot 57 percent (43-of-76), improving to 18-0 when hitting better than half of their shots. Indiana has won eight of the last 13 encounters with the Pistons and may host them in the opening round next weekend if Detroit fails to hold onto the seventh spot.

"I wasn't overly pleased with our defense, although (Indiana) is a very good offensive team and shot the ball very well tonight," Irvine said. "Some of that was probably our fault and some of that was their good play. Scoring points is not our problem, even without Grant Hill. For us to be effective we need to guard better. Give them credit, they hit some tough shots and that's the game they play."

Travis Best scored 13 points off the bench and reserves Chris Mullin and Austin Croshere added nine and eight, respectively, for Indiana. The Pacers scored 18 points off turnovers and buried 10-of-19 3-pointers.

"I think the good thing about getting this win today is that we will get to rest some of the guys as we get ready to head into the playoffs," Best said.

"I'm just happy that we're in the playoffs," Stackhouse said. "We're really not concerned about who we play. We feel we'll get another game, whether that's the New York game or the Chicago game. Moreso than anything, we want to be playing a little bit better than we are now."

Miller opened the scoring from beyond the arc and hit a 20-footer before Davis' layup gave Indiana a 7-0 lead. The Pacers did not trail thereafter and Smits' 14-footer opened a 26-14 bulge with 2:48 left in the first quarter.

Jerome Williams and Mikki Moore had 12 points apiece for Detroit, which shot 48 percent (41-of-85) and held a 40-32 advantage on the boards.

"We're happy," Pistons guard Lindsey Hunter said. "We still have to finish up strong, get everybody healthy and be ready to perform. That's our biggest thing. The playoffs is kind of a different game. We just have to be ready come that time."
