Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Alan Henderson scored 19 points as the Atlanta Hawks survived a furious finish by the Cleveland Cavaliers and snapped their nine-game losing streak with a 104-101 victory.

Cleveland used a 27-13 run to pull within 102-101 on Bob Sura's free throw with eight seconds left. Shawn Kemp scored nine points in the spurt and Earl Boykins added eight.

Bimbo Coles made two free throws with 7.6 seconds remaining to put Atlanta ahead by three and Sura missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Hawks closed the third quarter with a 21-6 burst to open an 81-67 cushion. Henderson scored nine of his 12 points in the period to help Atlanta win the last three meetings with the Cavs after losing the first.

"We got it going there in the third quarter and were able to feed off each other," Henderson said. "Guys were knocking down shots and moving the ball well."

"Most of the time the third quarter has been our nemesis," added Hawks guard Jim Jackson said. "(The fourth quarter) was a learning lesson. It's good for the younger guys to hang in there. Everything we do now is a learning experience."

Danny Ferry played his 721st game for the Cavaliers, breaking the team mark he shared with Bobby "Bingo" Smith. Ferry has been with Cleveland for 10 seasons after playing in the Italian League. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1989.

"It's nice, but I'm not going to make any big deal of it," Ferry said. "I take pride in being able to play night in and night out. It's just the way it worked out. I signed a long contract and was here a long time."

Jackson poured in 17 points and Dikembe Mutombo added 12 and 18 rebounds for the Hawks, who avoided their longest skid since dropping 16 straight during the 1975-76 season. LaPhonso Ellis, Lorenzen Wright and Dion Glover added 12 points apiece.

Henderson was 7-of-13 from the floor and Jackson 6-of-10 as Atlanta shot 53 percent (39-of-74). Jackson buried 4-of-6 3-pointers, helping the Hawks go 6-of-12 from behind the arc.

Kemp finished with 20 points and Sura had 18 for the Cavaliers, who shot 48 percent (40-of-84) and have lost three of their last four contests.

"We lost our focus out there," Kemp said. "I don't have a good feeling losing to a club that has lost as much as they have. I don't get anything positive from this. It was a winnable game."

Sura scored 13 points in the first half and Kemp added 11 as the Cavs opened a slim 49-47 lead.
