Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- In a game that the Seattle SuperSonics had to have, Gary Payton came up with a career performance.

Payton played all 48 minutes and scored a career-high 43 points as the SuperSonics moved into a seventh-place tie in the Western Conference with a 121-112 triumph over the Houston Rockets.

Seattle (44-36) is deadlocked with Sacramento for seventh in the West heading into Tuesday's showdown at Arco Arena. The winner of that contest plays the Utah Jazz in the first round and avoids meeting the top-seeded Los Angeles Lakers.

Houston, which had a five-game winning streak snapped, used a 15-5 run to close within 98-94 with 6:42 left as Shandon Anderson made two free throws. Anderson finished the spurt with six points and Cuttino Mobley added five.

Seattle took over thereafter, scoring nine straight points and opening a 13-point cushion with 4:01 left as rookie Lazaro Borrell had four in the burst.

Payton broke his previous high of 41 points set on February 15 against Washington. He shot 17-of-31 from the floor, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out seven assists tonight for Seattle, which never trailed.

"He played pretty good for a guy I wasn't sure was going to play tonight," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said of Payton. "His left knee has been bothering him and I didn't know until game time if he could play. Once he started, I knew I couldn't take him out because he could get cold. He was bionic out there."

"I knew if I played, I couldn't come out of the game because of my knee so I just tried to be as effective as I could," Payton said. "I was just trying to be aggressive out there. We needed to be more active on defense and attack the basket more."

Vin Baker scored 16 points and Rashard Lewis, a native of nearby Alief, Texas, added 15 as the Sonics won for only the second time in six contests. They avoided their first five-game road losing streak in nine seasons.

Mobley scored a career-high 35 points and rookie Steve Francis added 20 for the Rockets, who also had a six-game home winning streak stopped. Mobley topped his previous best 30-point performance against the Los Angeles Clippers on March 23.

"I was just trying to keep us in the game," Mobley said. "We were trying to stay on (Payton's) heels. They were setting a lot of picks to get him open. He took a lot of shots and made a lot of shots."

Anderson and Matt Bullard added 15 points each for Houston, which shot 51 percent (41-of-81). Mobley was 4-of-8 from 3-point range and Bullard 3-of-5 to help the Rockets shoot 10-of-25 from beyond the arc.

Seattle threatened to blow the game away early as they closed the first quarter on a 26-11 spurt for a 38-19 lead. Payton scored nine of his 15 points in that run and finished the period with two straight jumpers.

"It was like we couldn't stand success," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Our focus wasn't very good. They were in situations we should be used to by now, but it was like we were beating our heads into the wall. It was just a bad game."

The Rockets roared back with an 11-4 second-quarter run to move within 50-47 with 3:32 left as Bullard drilled a trio of 3-pointers.

Payton helped the Sonics regain their momentum with a 21-9 spurt to lead, 81-65, with 4:31 remaining in the third quarter. He netted nine points, including a 3-pointer to close the burst, and Lewis added six.
