Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- With the window open for fourth place in the Eastern Conference, the Charlotte Hornets climbed halfway through it.

David Wesley and Derrick Coleman had big third quarters as the Hornets kept control of their own destiny for home-court advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with their sixth straight victory, 103-88 over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Hornets (48-33) will play the Philadelphia 76ers in the opening round, beginning Saturday. On Monday, Philadelphia (48-33) lost at home to Indiana, giving away control of fourth place.

Charlotte needed to win both of its remaining games to claim the fourth spot and got halfway there tonight. The Hornets can clinch the spot if they beat shorthanded Miami at home on Wednesday. Charlotte holds the tiebreaker edge.

"We can still gain home-court advantage for the playoffs so we knew what we had to do and went out and did it," Hornets coach Paul Silas said.

The Hornets led by just one point at halftime but took charge with a scintillating third quarter. They outscored Cleveland, 34-17, shooting 65 percent (13-of-20) from the field while holding the Cavaliers to 32 percent (7-of-22).

Wesley scored 14 of his 23 points and Coleman 11 of his 21 in the period, which ended with Charlotte holding an 84-66 lead. The Hornets cruised from there and captured the season series, 3-1.

"In the second half, I thought we really picked it up and got great production out of Wesley and DC," Silas said. "I was very satisfied with the win."

Bob Sura scored 20 points off the bench and Shawn Kemp added 15 and 14 rebounds for the Cavaliers (31-50), who shot just 35 percent (35-of-100) overall and have lost 50 games for the first time since the 1986-87 season.

"I thought our inability to shoot the ball from a good percentage standpoint kind of zapped us off our energy in the third quarter," Cavs first-year coach Randy Wittman said. "When you're not making your shots, you have to find ways to score."

The Hornets led 50-49 at halftime and extended the margin to 68-63 before breaking open the game with an 11-0 run. Coleman's 3-pointer capped it at 79-63 with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter.

Anthony Mason had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Eddie Jones also scored 16 points for the Hornets, who shot 46 percent (38-of-83). Mason was instrumental in the low post, drawing the double-team and passing to open teammates.

"The third quarter was about coming out and putting it down," he said. "We gave them too many easy looks and in the third quarter, we didn't want to make anything easy for them."

Rookie Andre Miller continued his solid play with 16 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for the Cavs, who held a 57-47 rebounding edge.

"We wanted to end on a good note with a win at home, and that's not too good going into next season," Miller said. "I think I've done OK as being a point guard in the NBA. There are a lot of things expected of me from guys on the team. I think I gained the respect of guys on the team and around the league."
