Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets enter the playoffs with home-court advantage as the hottest team in the NBA.

The Hornets clinched fourth place in the Eastern Conference with an 83-73 victory over the Miami Heat, using a balanced attack for their seventh straight win.

Eddie Jones and Anthony Mason scored 14 points apiece for the Hornets (49-33), who tied Philadelphia for the fourth-best mark in the East and get the extra home game in the best-of-five first-round series by virtue of their 3-1 mark against the 76ers this season.

"We had a great season," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "The credit goes to these guys because they never quit, even though they had to overcome some trying circumstances. It's unbelievable that we finished the year with 49 wins. But we have to take it to the next level because we have a lot more work to do."

Charlotte overtook Toronto and Philadelphia by winning 14 of its last 16 games. It returns to the playoffs after a one-year absence but has won just one postseason series since 1993.

"We definitely wanted home-court advantage," Mason said. "We wanted to be in a comfortable setting."

Anthony Carter scored 16 points for the Heat (52-30), who rested All-Star center Alonzo Mourning for the last 15-plus minutes. Miami won its fourth straight Atlantic Division title and as the second seed in the East will face Detroit in the opening round.

The Heat have not won a playoff series since 1997 and may be without star guard Tim Hardaway, who has ankle and foot injuries and is questionable.

"We are ready for the playoffs but I would be even happier if everyone was healthy," Mourning said. "It's good that we are back in the same position as last year with a chance to make something better happen. Based on what happened the last two seasons, we have an extra incentive this year."

The Hornets took the lead for good in the first quarter as Mason scored eight points. A layup by Otis Thorpe kept Miami within 20-17 just over a minute into the second period before Charlotte opened it up with an 8-2 burst, taking a 28-19 lead on two free throws by Brad Miller with 7:54 remaining.

Rookie Eddie Robinson scored four points in the spurt and eight in the period, which ended with Charlotte holding a 44-31 lead.

"E-Rob has really played great as of late," Silas said. "He has great touch and has a lot of confidence with his shot."

Mourning collected 13 points before sitting down for good with 3:31 left in the third quarter. Carter capped a 7-2 spurt with a jumper that got Miami within a bucket with 2:27 left in the period.

However, Mason made a layup and David Wesley hit a jumper to give Charlotte a 59-53 lead entering the fourth quarter. A dunk by Miller extended the margin to 65-55 with 9:49 left and the Heat got no closer than seven points thereafter.

"In the first half we did not attack anything we discussed," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "The ball simply did not move, it stuck in our hands on the double-team; we simply did not swing the ball well. We got back in the game in the second half but we did not have the energy defensively to sustain our run."

Robinson scored 13 points, Derrick Coleman added 12 and Elden Campbell 11 for the Hornets, who shot 49 percent (31-of-63) from the field despite an 0-of-7 showing from 3-point range.

Jamal Mashburn scored 15 points for the Heat, who shot 40 percent (29-of-72) and closed the season with four losses in six games.
