Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers are ready for the NBA playoffs. The Atlanta Hawks are ready for the lottery.

Jalen Rose scored 19 points to lead eight players in double figures as the Pacers tuned up for the postseason with a 111-92 victory over the lifeless Atlanta Hawks.

The Pacers (56-26) are the top seed in the Eastern Conference and face the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round for the second straight season. Indiana swept Milwaukee in the opening round last season and split four games against them this season.

"We played against them in the series last year, and we swept them, so we are pretty sure they are going to be trying to avenge those losses," Rose said.

Indiana closed the regular season by winning five straight and nine of its last 10 games.

Travis Best added 14 points and rookie Jeff Foster added season highs of 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Pacers, who never trailed and led by as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks concluded a miserable season with a 28-54 record, their worst mark since the club moved to Atlanta in 1968. Atlanta finished with the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference, better only than the Chicago Bulls.

With the season over, Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens, the winningest coach in NBA history with 1,179 wins, may have been on the bench for the last time. The Hawks could make wholesale changes in the offseason and Wilkens may not be retained.

"They always look to blame someone and it usually ends up being the coach," Wilkens said. "Whatever happens, happens.

"This was not a very good year for us. We didn't get off to a very good start at all. In the beginning, everyone was optimistic, but not everyone came together and our chemistry never happened. There were a lot of distractions."

Lorenzen Wright netted 23 points and Jim Jackson 16 for Atlanta, which lost 10 of its last 12 games.

"Our job is to play, play hard and strong," Jackson said. "This season didn't go the way we planned, but we still have to come to play every night and that included the final game of the season."

The Hawks were within 62-56 with 7:09 left in the third quarter on a dunk by rookie Jason Terry but that was as close as they would get.

Rose and Reggie Miller drained consecutive 3-pointers to trigger a 15-6 spurt that Miller capped with a layup, giving Indiana a 77-62 advantage with 2:42 left in the third quarter. The Pacers led by double digits thereafter.

A 15-footer by teenage rookie Jonathan Bender with 2:34 left gave Indiana its biggest lead at 106-82.

Miller finished with 13 points and Bender added a season-high 11 for Indiana, which shot 49 percent (44-of-90) from the field and held a 58-41 rebounding advantage. Atlanta shot 37 percent (34-of-92).

"I felt pretty good competing for the first time in a while," said Bender, who played in just 24 games this season after entering the NBA directly out of high school. "It's a little different when you bang against each other in practice and get the call to actually do it in a game."
