Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets ended a dismal season, and likely the tenure of coach Don Casey, with yet another defeat.

Lamond Murray sank a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to lift the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 111-108 victory and hand the Nets their 11th straight defeat in the season finale for both teams.

According to various reports, the Nets (31-51) will not retain Casey, general manager John Nash and president Michael Rowe after the season. The Nets failed to make the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons.

"We didn't want to end the season without showing you another way to lose a game," Casey said. "Whether they are tired or poorly coached, brain-locked, I don't know. But it's repetitive."

The Nets have lost 11 straight games for the first time since the 1990-91 season. It is their worst streak to close a season.

Murray scored 27 points and Shawn Kemp added 23 for the Cavaliers (32-50), who failed to make the playoffs for the third time in four years.

Keith Van Horn and Johnny Newman each scored 29 points and Kendall Gill added 24 for the Nets.

"There was a lot of character built this season," Gill said. "This has been a slide like I've never been through. Hopefully everyone can come back and be healthy for a full year."

Elliot Perry sank a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left to give the Nets a 108-105 lead before Murray hit 1-of-2 from the line to cut the deficit to one point. Following a delay call against the Nets, Murray capitalized with a 23-foot jumper.

"I was trying to get a 2 but I was so wide open at the 3 that I took the shot," Murray said. "Whoever was open was definitely going to get the look."

Gill missed a jumper and Kemp iced the win with a pair of free throws.

The Nets led by as many as eight points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, taking a 98-90 advantage when Newman sank a pair of free throws with 4:57 left.

But Kemp, who had 11 points in the final period, sparked a 7-0 run with a three-point play and a short jumper after blocking a shot by Jamie Feick. Kemp added 13 rebounds.

Cleveland has won 12 of the last 14 meetings between the teams.
