Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic showed considerable toughness without Tracy McGrady's tough-guy act or Grant Hill.

After a deflating defeat to Philadelphia that featured the ejection and ensuing suspension of McGrady, the Magic used a balanced scoring attack and the guts of Darrell Armstrong to outlast the winless Atlanta Hawks, 107-104.

Hill was noticeably hobbled by a sore ankle during Friday's disheartening 87-80 loss to Philadelphia and with McGrady serving his one-game suspension for fighting with 76ers point guard Eric Snow, the Magic appeared to be in a bind.

But Armstrong scored 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead six players in double figures as coach Doc Rivers' squad looked much the way it did last season, when it was the NBA's biggest surprise.

"Darrell was huge," Rivers said. "I get credit, the coaches get credit, Darrell Armstrong should get the credit because he is the coach on the basketball floor. He took the game over today. He turned to the bench and said, `Put me in a pick-and-roll at the top and I'll deliver.' And I was smart enough to listen."

Pat Garrity and rookie Mike Miller scored 19 points each, Monty Williams added 16, Bo Outlaw 14 and John Amaechi 13 as the Magic improved to 2-2.

"Unfortunately, Grant's going to be missing for a while and Tracy was out," said Miller, who got his first NBA start. "It felt good and I'm just happy we got the win. And with those two out it was a big win. Grant told me to make sure to be aggressive. I talked to him before the game."

"We just have to play four quarters," Williams said. "It's going to get tougher as we go along and everyone's going to get more and more focused on what we're doing."

After Don Reid snapped a 91-91 tie with a follow shot with 7:15 to play, Armstrong hit a 3-pointer and connnected from 15 and 17 feet on successive trips to give Orlando a 100-93 lead with 4:49 left.

Atlanta, desperate for its first win of the season, had a chance to knot the contest at the buzzer but Jimmy Jackson misfired on a 38-footer as Orlando escaped with a win despite the absence of its two big offseason acquisitions.

Roshown McLeod and Chris Crawford had career highs with 24 and 22 points, respectively, for Atlanta, which is still without center Dikembe Mutombo (malaria).

"I just wanted to go out there and be aggressive and make my first couple of shots," Crawford said. "And I got a couple of rebounds here and there. I felt good and they were looking for me a few times, and I was able to hit the shots."

Alan Henderson did a solid job in the middle with 19 points and 15 rebounds as the Hawks held a 43-40 advantage on the boards. Atlanta shot 44 percent (39-of-88) and scored a whopping 35 points off 22 Orlando turnovers.

"Obviously a disappointing result," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said after failing to pick up his first career NBA win. "It was a good effort down the stretch, but still very disappointed with the result. Different guys stepped up, Chris Crawford breaking out and Roshown McLeod stepping up. The effort we put up was outstanding. But we just have to do it every possession right to the finish."

The Magic shot 51 percent (37-of-73) and outscored the Hawks, 29-20, at the line.

After building a 63-51 halftime lead, the Magic were outplayed in the third quarter. McLeod, who was 11-of-22 from the floor, capped an 18-5 run with a 25-footer that shaved the deficit to 69-64 with 6:27 left in the third quarter. His 23-footer just before the end of the period got Atlanta within 81-78.

The fourth quarter featured four ties, the last of which was snapped by Reid's follow shot.
