Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Isiah Thomas, who excelled despite his diminutive size, seems to be having a positive influence on Travis Best, another undersized point guard.

Best scored 25 points and dished out five assists for his second straight strong outing and Reggie Miller closed out the contest with three straight 3-pointers, leading the Indiana Pacers to a 94-81 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Best, who averaged 8.9 points last year as a reserve point guard under coach Larry Bird, was coming off a career night, when he had 30 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. However, his efforts went for nothing in a 94-88 loss at Dallas.

Tonight, the 5-11 guard led the Pacers (1-2) to their first victory under rookie coach Thomas after the team had raised its 1999-2000 Eastern Conference Champion banner to the rafters of Conseco Fieldhouse.

"(Best) hasn't surprised me at all," Thomas said. "With his ability to handle the ball, I don't think any guard in the league can stay in front of him. If he's hitting his perimeter shot, he becomes virtually unstoppable.

"I want to get to the day that I have him, Jalen (Rose) and Reggie on the floor at the same time," Thomas added.

Best is averaging a team-high 23.3 points for the Pacers, who have needed someone else to step up after losing starters guard Mark Jackson to free agency, center Rik Smits to retirement, forward Dale Davis to a trade to Portland and swingman Rose to a broken wrist.

"I'm not doing anything different, but just working a little harder and probably looking for the openings a little more," Best said.

The Pacers held the lowly Bulls (0-3) to just two baskets over the final 8:47 but were unable to break open the game. Miller scored nine points in the final 1:29, making the final score appear more lopsided than the game actually was.

"Indiana came into this game with the same record as us, so this was a game we thought we should win," Brand said. "Getting off to this slow start is a concern psychologically for a young bunch like us. We just have to work harder."

Elton Brand led the Bulls with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Ron Mercer scored 15 and Brad Miller added 13 but Chicago got just 12 points from its bench.

Indiana has won eight of the last nine meetings, with Chicago pulling out an 83-82 home win on January 24. The Pacers have won five straight against the Bulls at home.

The Pacers never led until Best's jumper gave them a 24-23 edge with 27 seconds left in the first quarter. They did not go ahead to stay until Jermaine O'Neal connected from 16 feet with 8:23 left in the half.

Fred Hoiberg's 23-footer had the Bulls within 39-37 with 4:23 before the break but the Pacers closed the half with an 11-2 run to take a 50-39 advantage.

Croshere started the run with a 3-pointer and also hit a pair of free throws. Best and Zan Tabak had three points apiece in the run.

Rookie forward Marcus Fizer had the Bulls within 72-66 when he connected on a hook shot with 8:45 to go. But that was Chicago's last basket until Brad Miller grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it back in with 1:47 to play.

Reggie Miller made sure the Bulls didn't get any ideas about a late comeback. With the Bulls watching Best, Miller was able to spot up for the crushing 3-pointers.

"He's one of those rare players in this league where all of a sudden he can heat up," Thomas said. "He wasn't having a good shooting night, then the game got interesting and he put on a different face."
