Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Once Shaquille O'Neal got his diesel engine running, the Vancouver Grizzlies and their unbeaten record had no chance.

O'Neal dominated the third quarter after a lackluster first half and finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds as the Lakers outclassed the Grizzlies in a 98-89 victory.

The NBA Most Valuable Player had nine points in the first half as the Lakers opened a 47-40 lead. With the Grizzlies still hanging around at 55-47 with 8 1/2 minutes to play in the third period, O'Neal took over.

"We came out in the first half kind of slow," O'Neal said. "We had a pretty good third quarter."

"Playing against a team like the Lakers, you know that the third quarter is a crucial quarter," Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "They came out and turned up the defense on us."

In a 16-4 run, O'Neal scored 10 straight Lakers points with an array of dunks and short jumpers. He then fed Kobe Bryant for a layup that gave Los Angeles its largest lead at 71-51 with 3:21 remaining in the period.

"They (were) just looking for me," O'Neal said. "I was getting open, taking a lot of shots and they were going in."

"In the third quarter, we had to come out with some kind of spark," Bryant said. "We knew that because this is a young team with energy and you don't want to give life to a young team."

The 7-2 center again had trouble at the foul line, making just 3-of-14. But he got some help from Bryant and Horace Grant as the Lakers defeated the Grizzlies for the 19th time in 20 meetings.

Bryant scored 22 points and Grant added 19 and 11 rebounds for Los Angeles (2-1), which shot 49 percent (38-of-78) and held a 45-35 edge on the boards.

Bryant also did a nice job on Michael Dickerson, holding him to five points on 2-of-10 shooting. He scored 45 points in the first two games.

"It's a challenge whenever you face a 2-guard as active as Michael Dickerson," Bryant said. "It gets me more involved in the game and it makes the game fun to play."

"I wouldn't say that it was one-sided," Lowe said. "Kobe is a great player and he does that quite often in terms of taking over a game."

The Lakers took a 77-60 lead into the fourth quarter and coach Phil Jackson rested O'Neal and some of his starters. But the Grizzlies used a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to single digits. The starters returned and made sure Vancouver got no closer than eight points.

"We just had to go back in and finish the job," O'Neal said.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 24 points and Mike Bibby added 23 and eight assists for the Grizzlies, who shot 41 percent (31-of-76) and lost to the Lakers for the seventh straight time.
