Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- On the verge of a comeback victory, the Denver Nuggets allowed the Phoenix Suns to come back.

Tony Delk scored 14 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Suns erased a 15-point deficit with 3:45 left and pulled out an incredible 102-99 victory over the Nuggets.

Denver appeared to have the game well in hand when Robert Pack hit two free throws to forge a 93-78 cushion. The Nuggets had trailed by as many as 12 midway through the second quarter but took advantage of a second-half collapse by Phoenix, which made only 3-of-15 shots and committed 11 turnovers in the third quarter.

The Nuggets continued to build upon their lead throughout the fourth quarter but the Suns never gave up and continually forced Denver into careless turnovers before Delk began Phoenix's revival with a short jumper with 3:33 left.

The Suns still trailed 98-88 with 1:45 to play when Jason Kidd hit three free throws. After a Denver turnover, Delk canned a 3-pointer 10 seconds later.

Delk hit an 18-footer and after the Nuggets coughed up the ball again, Kidd nailed a running jumper to bring Phoenix within a point with 1:11 left.

The teams traded a free throw each before Suns rookie forward Ruben Garces tapped in Kidd's miss for a 100-99 lead with 17 seconds left.

"I never thought we were out of it," Delk said. "We had some breaks go our way down the stretch. We gave a team effort, we kept fighting and it paid off."

"It was very frustrating, we had the game won," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "We relaxed too much and quit doing the things we were doing the whole game, the things that got us the lead. That was a tough loss."

Kidd had 22 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for Phoenix. Nick Van Exel had 14 points and nine assists for Denver, which has dropped 12 of the last 13 meetings between the teams.

"We played hard in the first quarter and then let them do whatever they wanted," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "We went with a small lineup and came to life. We spread the floor for Jason and let him make plays."

Shawn Marion scored 10 of his 21 points in the first quarter as the Suns shot a blistering 65 percent (13-of-20) to take a 27-19 lead.

Phoenix continued its hot shooting in the second quarter and built a 42-30 cushion on two free throws by Clifford Robinson with 5:07 left. But Denver reeled off nine straight points to draw within three and trailed 50-45 at the half.

As hot as the Suns were in the first half, they were ice-cold in the third quarter as the Nuggets mounted a comeback with a smothering defense that accounted for seven steals in the session.

Tariq Abdul-Wahad's 18-footer with 5:10 left gave the Nuggets their first lead since the early stages of the contest and Denver took a 70-65 advantage into the final period.

"It's been a long time since I've been this frustrated after a loss, especially since we had the game won," Nuggets swingman George McCloud said.

Raef LaFrentz had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Voshon Lenard and Pack scored 13 points apiece for Denver, which shot 40 percent (33-of-82) and committed eight of its 20 turnovers in the fourth quarter.

Robinson scored 12 points for the Suns, who shot 49 percent (37-of-75) and converted 25-of-31 free throws.
