Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Vlade Divac's layup snapped a tie with 22.3 seconds remaining and Bobby Jackson added two free throws as the Sacramento Kings ended an 11-game losing streak against the Portland Trail Blazers with a 79-75 victory.

After Rasheed Wallace made back-to-back baskets to pull Portland into a 75-75 tie, Divac took a pass from Chris Webber and scored on a lay-in.

Scottie Pippen lost control of the ball on the Blazers' next possession and while battling Jackson committed a foul with 11.1 seconds left. Jackson converted both free throws and Wallace missed a 3-pointer as Sacramento posted its first win over Portland since December 16, 1997.

"We kept our defensive intensity up during that last three minutes, we got some loose balls," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "The play Bobby made was terrific at the end. We finally got the spacing right, he was open, Jon Barry was open on top, and we finally got to the point we wanted to a long time ago."

Divac finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Webber scored 29 points for the Kings, who played their home opener after four road games.

"We beat Portland because we played defense," Divac said. "We didn't shoot very well. It's very important for us to continue to play good defense this year, it's the only way we can improve. It's all about attitude. ... Coach talked about it all year long last year, and we responded very well tonight."

This was Sacramento's final contest without flashy point guard Jason Williams, who completed a five-game suspension for violating the NBA's substance abuse policy. He will be available for Wednesday's game against Golden State.

Wallace had 24 points and nine rebounds while Pippen, playing on a sore right ankle, collected 13 points and seven assists. The Blazers (1-3) did not suffer their third loss last season until November 29.

The Kings used an 11-2 run spanning the end of the third quarter and ending with Webber's basket with 10:02 left in the fourth to take their biggest lead at 69-56.

Portland responded with a 13-2 spurt that began with Bonzi Wells' basket and closed with Webber being called for goaltending on a shot by Wallace. That pulled the Blazers within 71-69 with 5:49 remaining.

"We knew we had an opporuntiy to win if we played well, and we did, but not for 48 minutes," Pippen said. "We still haven't put a complete game together. Right now, we'll try to build on what we did tonight. Our defense did a good job, but we still didn't come away with a win."

Both teams shot poorly. Sacramento's Peja Stojakovic was 1-of-11 for two points and Doug Christie had eight points on 3-of-11 shooting. As a team, the Kings shot 37.3 percent from the field (31-for-83), including 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from 3-point range.

"I didn't play very well in this game, especially the home opener, but I'm glad that we got the win in the home opener," said Stojakovic, who was averaging nearly 20 points per game. "We did a great job on defense and that's what helped us win the game. It's a good start for us at home since we're here a lot the next three weeks."

Damon Stoudamire collected eight points and Steve Smith scored just four for the Blazers, who shot 36.8 percent (32-for-87) but held a 48-46 edge in rebounding and recorded a season-high 10 blocks. Wallace and Stacey Augmon were the only Portland players to go to the foul line.

"It's unusual for none of our starters to go to the line, except for Rasheed, so because of that we didn't get calls," Smith said. "We did a good job defensively on Stojakovic but didn't make shots on our end."
