Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- John Starks is no Jeff Hornacek but he did his best imitation in leading the Utah Jazz to victory.

Starks scored seven of his 16 points during a 12-0 run over the final 3:19 as the Jazz remained undefeated with a 98-92 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Starks was signed as a free agent in the offseason and is filling the shooting guard spot vacated by the retired Hornacek. Coming into tonight, Starks was averaging 14 points per game.

Starks was shut down for most of the contest and the Jazz trailed 92-86 with 3:21 to go after Kevin Garnett made a pair of free throws for Minnesota.

But the veteran guard drained a pair of free throws and, after Timberwolves guard Chauncey Billups was called for an offensive foul, Starks buried a three-pointer from the right corner to pull the Jazz within 92-91 with 1:48 to play.

Danny Manning tied it by hitting his second free throw and Karl Malone made two more free throws to give Utah its first lead since scoring the game's first basket.

Garnett and Terrell Brandon had chances to tie it but missed 10-foot jumpers. Bryon Russell and Starks each sank two free throws to seal the victory around a missed 3-pointer by Garnett with six seconds to play.

Starks' heroics helped the Jazz improve to 4-0 for just the second time in team history. Utah won six straight to start the lockout-shortened 1999 campaign.

Six players reached double figures for the Jazz, led by Malone's 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting with 15 rebounds. Utah did most of its work in the paint, outscoring Minnesota by a comfortable 38-24 margin.

Brandon finished with 25 points and Garnett had 22 for the Wolves, who fell to 3-22 all-time at the Delta Center.

Minnesota had control early in the game and enjoyed an 8-0 run to take its largest lead at 25-12 with three minutes remaining in the first. Billups drained consecutive three-pointers from the left corner and right sideline to cap the burst.

The second quarter saw a rejuvenated Utah team use a 10-1 to tie the game at 49-49 on Stockton's jumper with 28 seconds remaining, its first tie since 4-4 in the first minute of the contest.

Garnett gave the Wolves some momentum heading into overtime with a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining. But the Jazz tied the contest at 55-55 , this time on Stockton's two free throws with 8:09 to go.

Wally Szczerbiak had one of his better games for Minnesota, nailing consecutive three-pointers in the third quarter for a 63-57 advantage. He scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc.

After Malone converted a free throw off Szczerbiak's flagrant foul and nailed a jumper on the following possession, Brandon bounced back with six straight points to give Minnesota a 69-61 lead with 3:39 to left in the third.
