Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Allan Houston scored 24 points and Glen Rice added 18 to lead the New York Knicks to their third straight victory, 103-89 over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Houston was 10-of-20 from the field and Rice 8-of-14 for New York, which shot 52 percent (43-of-82). Milwaukee native Latrell Sprewell contributed 16 points and seven rebounds but made just 5-of-15 shots.

Sprewell was warned by NBA officials on Monday to watch his comments regarding potential free agent forward Chris Webber. After the game he complained about back pain and refused to speak about Monday's meeting with league officials.

"My back's tight right now. I'm not sure about tomorrow," said Sprewell about playing against the Cleveland Cavaliers. "I'm not thinking about that right now. It's a non-issue when I play."

The Knicks, who have been rumored to be seeking a power forward like Webber or free agent Joe Smith, held a 44-34 advantage on the boards. Forwards Larry Johnson and Marcus Camby combined for 28 points and 20 rebounds for New York, which outscored Milwaukee, 48-24, in the paint.

Houston started out on a tear, scoring 13 points in the first quarter to help the Knicks build a 32-20 lead. They never trailed thereafter and defeated the Bucks for the sixth straight time.

"They're a very good team," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "This is a really good win for us. We played very well for three quarters, and then survived the fourth. We did what I think a lot of teams in the NBA do: waited for the clock to run out."

Lindsey Hunter scored 23 points and Glenn Robinson added 21 points, but committed seven of Milwaukee's 15 turnovers. Ray Allen, playing his 300th consecutive NBA game, added 20 and seven rebounds for the Bucks.

"Three out of four games we've been playing from behind," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "We are not playing complete games right now. We're not playing 48 minutes of basketball. We get down too early and right now I don't think we have the confidence to come back from those deficits."

"We have the capability to win ballgames," Allen said. "We just need to play mistake-free basketball. Our defense is not assertive enough. We don't get around the lane, so we don't get good shots. We lack the aggression to go in there and score.

Hunter made 7-of-12 shots from behind the arc, tying the Bucks record for 3-pointers made.

Houston made eight of his first 12 shots as the Knicks took a 56-43 lead at halftime.

Charlie Ward, who had 12 points and nine assists, made consecutive 3-pointers to give the Knicks a 64-46 lead with 9:41 left in the third period. New York took its biggest lead when Houston sank a 3-pointer to make it 67-48 with 6:07 to go in the third.

The Bucks used a 7-0 spurt in the fourth period to cut the deficit to 89-79 when Sam Cassell made a free throw with 7:14 to go after a technical was called on Knicks guard Chris Childs. Hunter then missed a 19-footer and Johnson answered with a 3-pointer to give New York a 92-79 advantage with 6:25 remaining. Rice followed with a basket and the Bucks could not cut the deficit under 11 points thereafter.
